The research described in this article focused on how satisfied Australian academics are when they use the Internet to search for information. The significant methodological outcome of the research was its validation of magnitude estimates of user satisfaction with information seeking on the Internet. Testing the validity and reliability of magnitude estimation as a technique for gathering and analyzing interval data on satisfaction with information seeking was key to the investigation. Data for user satisfaction were then associated with end-user characteristics like training, frequency of use, and expectation of success. The study found that Australian academics generally have a high expectation of success when they engage in information seeking on the Internet, and are satisfied with the process regardless of how frequently they use the network or whether or not they have received formal training. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

User satisfaction with information seeking on the Internet

This study explores the impact of the Internet on the scientific communication process and the productivity of the scientists in Nigerian universities. It was expected that, besides the direct contribution of the Internet to research through access to vast stores of scientific information, the Internet would increase the number of colleagues a scientist communicates with on a regular basis, and consequently stimulate higher productivity. The results show that, while there is a correlation between the number of contacts maintained by the scientists and their productivity, the Internet contributes little to increasing those contacts or improving productivity.

Internet resources and productivity in scientific research in Nigerian universities

This study addresses the problem of Internet information services having to meet the increasing information demands of users in the dynamic Internet environment. The purpose of this research was to use K-12 digital reference services as a starting point to better understand the process of building and maintaining Internet information services. The study has three specific objectives: (1) to build and apply a conceptual framework based on complexity research, literature, and the researcher's experience; (2) to use this conceptual framework to empirically describe how organizations, specifically K-12 digital reference services, build and maintain services in the dynamic Internet environment; and (3) to seek commonalties across these descriptions. Qualitative methods (elite interviews and document analysis) were used to elicit descriptions of six exemplary K-12 digital reference services. These descriptions were then compared across organizations to find commonalties. Appended are the Pre-Test Interview Transcript, quality criteria developed by the expert panel, the AskERIC Pre-Test, Internet sites for further information, and a synopsis of data gathering. The methodology for the inquiry was to solicit persons with knowledge regarding the impact of technology on society's institutions, the idiosyncracies of collaboration, or both. The individuals selected to participate in this inquiry were drawn from a variety of backgrounds. Fifty academic deans were sampled in an effort to collect the opinions of those individuals most likely wanting to defend the traditional value system of the university. Another group included 90 individuals with knowledge of industry-academe alliances or technology transfer. A third group of surveys were sent to 20 individuals whom the committee regarded as "visionaries." This group was expected to be capable of addressing the questions from a more philosophical basis.
