The Role of Silicon in Antiherbivore Phytohormonal Signalling
TL;DR: A conceptual model for the interactions between Si and JA signalling in wounded plants is presented and it is shown that Si reduces JA concentrations in plants subjected to chemical induction and herbivory by 34% and 32%, respectively.
Journal ArticleDOI
Silicon deposition on guard cells increases stomatal sensitivity as mediated by K+ efflux and consequently reduces stomatal conductance
Rebecca K. Vandegeer,Chenchen Zhao,Ximena Cibils-Stewart,Richard Wuhrer,Casey R. Hall,Susan E. Hartley,David T. Tissue,Scott N. Johnson +7 more
TL;DR: A novel underlying mechanism for reduced stomatal conductance with Si application is suggested; specifically, that Si deposition on stomatic guard cells promotes greater stomata sensitivity as mediated by guard cell K+ efflux.
Journal ArticleDOI
Elevated atmospheric CO2 suppresses jasmonate and silicon-based defences without affecting herbivores
Journal ArticleDOI
Silicon Alters Leaf Surface Morphology and Suppresses Insect Herbivory in a Model Grass Species.
TL;DR: The data show that Si acts as a direct defence against leaf-chewing insects by changing the morphology of specialised defence structures without altering leaf mechanical traits.
Journal ArticleDOI
Silicon is an inducible and effective herbivore defence against Helicoverpa punctigera (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) in soybean.
TL;DR: To the authors' knowledge, this is only the second report of Si-based herbivore defence in soybean; the rapid increase in leaf Si following herbivory being indicative of an induced defence is taken together with the other benefits of Si supplementation of legumes to prove an effective herbivor defence in legumes as well as grasses.
