Aldehyde hydrogenation catalyst

A methanol synthesis catalyst which comprises a major portion by weight of the oxides of copper and zinc and a minor portion by weight of a thermal stabilizing metal oxide is useful for the synthesis of methanol from the oxides of carbon and hydrogen at relatively low temperatures. The catalyst is characterized in that the ratio of copper oxide to zinc oxide, each expressed as a metal by weight, is in the range of from 2:1 to 3.5:1 and by the intimate association with each other of copper and zinc oxides and with said thermal stabilizing oxide. Catalyst for the synthesis of methanol

A catalyst particularly useful in the production of methanol can be made by preparing a solution of copper and zinc nitrates, the ratio of copper to zinc being from 1:1 to 8:1 and then precipitating the copper and zinc by the addition of ammonium carbonate or ammonium bicarbonate. After the precipitated material has been agglomerated and calcined, a copper oxide-zinc oxide catalyst, low in sodium and sulfur is obtained.

A ZINC, COPPER AND CHROMIUM CATALYST HAS BEEN USED AS A LOW TEMPERATURE METHANOL SYNTHESIS CATALYST, BUT ALUMINA HAS BEEN DISCOUNTED AS HAVING NO PRACTICAL INTEREST AS AN INGREDIENT IN A METHANOL SYNTHESIS CATALYST. HOWEVER, UNDER CERTAIN CONDITIONS ALUMINA CAN BE USED TO ADVANTAGE IN SUCH CATALYSTS.
