Linguistic complexity : the influence of social change on verbal inflection

This thesis examines the effects of contact on the grammars of the languages of two Saharan oases, Siwa and Tabelbala. These share similar linguistic ecologies in many respects, and can be regarded as among the most extreme representatives of a language contact situation ongoing for centuries across the oases of the northern Sahara. This work identifies and argues for contact effects across a wide range of core morphology and syntax, using these both to shed new light on regional history and to test claims about the limits on, and expected outcomes of, contact. While reaffirming the ubiquity of pattern copying, the results encourage an expanded understanding of the role of material borrowing in grammatical contact, showing that the borrowing of functional morphemes and of paradigmatic sets of words or phrases containing them can lead to grammatical change. More generally, it confirms the uniformitarian principle that diachronic change arises through the long-term application of processes observable in synchronic language contact situations. The similarity of the sociolinguistic situations provides a close approximation to a natural controlled experiment, allowing us to pinpoint cases where differences in the original structure of the recipient language appear to have influenced its receptivity to external influence in those aspects of structure.

Grammatical Contact in the Sahara: Arabic, Berber, and Songhay in Tabelbala and Siwa

Qui sont les locuteurs de l'arabe maghrebin (dans ses diverses varietes) en France et quelles sont leurs pratiques langagieres ? Etudier ces pratiques suppose que l'on s'interesse aux phenomenes migratoires lies a la (post)colonisation du Nord de l'Afrique. Cette prise en compte, dans une etude sociolinguistique, de la diversite des profils, liee a l'histoire, sous l'angle seculier de pratiques potentielles de l'arabe maghrebin constitue une approche inedite.Ce travail reunit des personnes ayant un lien familial avec le Maroc, l'Algerie ou la Tunisie, de traditions musulmanes, juives et chretiennes, et, parmi les personnes originaires d'Algerie, des harkis et des pieds-noirs, et/ou leurs descendants nes et/ou socialises en France. La premiere partie s'interesse au concept d'ethnicite et montre que les termes " assimilation/integration " fonctionnent sur un mode injonctif et ne constituent plus des outils theoriques pertinents. Enfin, sont examinees les categorisations ayant trait aux populations considerees.La seconde partie examine le processus de transmission, les representations et pratiques langagieres declarees, en s'appuyant sur les entretiens recueillis. Concernant la transmission, le modele dominant qui presuppose une perte de la langue familiale sur trois generations conduit a masquer ou a schematiser un processus autrement plus complexe. Cette these met en evidence qu'il ne s'agit pas d'un processus lineaire, tant dans la (re)definition proposee qu'a travers les entretiens et les parcours. Enfin, la troisieme partie s'interesse aux pratiques langagieres effectives et propose des pistes d'analyse autour des questions de variation, de koineisation et d'accommodation.

Locuteurs de l'arabe maghrébin - langue de France : une analyse sociolinguistique des représentations, des pratiques langagières et du processus de transmission

This paper seeks to establish the first cladistic subgrouping of Songhay explicitly based on shared arbitrary innovations, a prerequisite both for distinguishing recent loans from valid extra-Songhay comparanda and for determining how Songhay spread. The results indicate that the Northern Songhay languages of the Sahara form a valid subfamily, even though no known historical records link Tabelbala to the others, and that Northern Songhay and Western Songhay (spoken around Timbuktu and Djenne) together form a valid subfamily, Northwestern Songhay. The speakers of Proto-Northern Songhay practised cultivation and permanent architecture, but were unfamiliar with date palms. Proto-Northwestern Songhay was already in contact with Berber and probably (perhaps indirectly) with Arabic, and was spoken along the Niger River. Proto-Songhay itself appears likely to have been in contact with Gur languages, confirming its relatively southerly location. This result is compatible with two scenarios for the northerly spread of Songhay. On Hypothesis A, Northern Songhay spread out from an oasis northeast of Gao, probably Tadmakkat or Takedda, and Northwestern Songhay had been spoken in areas west of Gao which now speak Eastern Songhay. On Hypothesis B, Northern Songhay spread out from the Timbuktu region, and Western Songhay derives from heavy " de-creolising " influence by Eastern Songhay on an originally Northern Songhay language. To choose between these hypotheses, further fieldwork will be required.

The Subclassification of Songhay and its Historical Implications

French colonies were created for the benefit not of the indigenous conquered peoples but of the home country. Their borders were set for political convenience and produced a jumble of ethnicities, languages, and cultures. Exploitation came first, and there was generally no attempt to find a workable educational solution to the local diversity. During French rule, a small elite was “assimilated,” educated in French and convinced of its value. Local languages were stigmatized and banned for school use, reducing their status even in the eyes of their speakers. After independence, the French-speaking elite replaced the colonial rulers, applying much the same language policy or in a few cases attempting to establish hegemony for a local variety. Creoles too were stigmatized. However, centralized language policy failed to change widespread traditional language practices: it was not just the pressure of other interest groups, but even more the effects of economic, demographic and political pressures that hindered producing a French-speaking population. Thus, it is not just the competition of various levels of language management, but rather the political and economic weakness that prevents the solution of the language problems first recognized half a century ago.

Le(s) futur(s) en arabe. Réflexions pour une typologie

Dans la Mauritanie contemporaine, la revendication de l'arabe fait figure de principe fondamental de l'entite maure. Pourtant les populations sahariennes du Sahara occidental furent longtemps berberophones et mirent sans doute plusieurs siecles a changer de « langue maternelle ». C'est d'abord sur cette arabisation dialectale que je m'interroge, en montrant qu'on ne peut pas la couper completement du mouvement d'islamisation qui l'a precedee et qui semble avoir influe fortement sur l'image que ces populations pouvaient se faire d'elles-memes. Si, a partir du 18ᵉ siecle, l'arabite culturelle de cette region prend des contours plus nets, il faut preter attention au fait que, derriere l'unite apparente du terme « arabe », se cache une dualite mouvante — ce qu'on appelle la diglossie arabe litteraire/dialecte —, a laquelle correspondent deux formes culturelles distinctes. Je propose ici de caracteriser la culture savante des zwâye comme « aurale » (par dela la dichotomie ecrit/oral) par opposition a l'oralite de la culture populaire en dialecte, telle qu'elle s'incarne notamment chez les musiciens-chanteurs. Dans la derniere partie, j'etudie l'evolution recente de la diglossie et les tentatives faites pour echapper aux difficultes posees par cette opposition, qu'elles restent a l'interieur du domaine arabe ou qu'elles choisissent d'en sortir. La encore le poids de l'ideologie se fait sentir et les representations des locuteurs influent sur leurs productions langagieres.

Dictionnaire zénaga - français : le berbère de Mauritanie présenté par racines dans une perspective comparative

Actuellement le zenaga n'est plus parle en Mauritanie que par un petit nombre de locuteurs adultes bilingues (quelques milliers au maximum). L'abandon du berbere zenaga semble s'etre realise tres graduellement, sur plus de six cents ans, apres l'arrivee d'une fraction des Arabes Maʕqil dans le Sud marocain, aux XIIIe-XIVe siecles. Pour autant, les premiers contacts du zenaga avec l'arabe ne datent pas du milieu du second millenaire car, des les debuts de l'islamisation, quelques premices de l'arabisation culturelle etaient deja en place. Cet article porte sur les effets du contact entre l'arabe et le berbere. Il evoque la question des emprunts lexicaux, mais traite surtout des ressemblances observees au niveau morphosyntaxique, qu'elles soient le produit d'un heritage commun ou correspondent a des innovations propres a l'aire culturelle consideree. En conclusion, il apparait que les particularites observees ne manifestent pas de rupture typologique, ni dans une langue, ni dans l'autre. Par contre, l'etude revele une certaine osmose (faite d'evolutions convergentes et de developpements paralleles) qui ne se comprend sans doute que par reference au contexte social et culturel partage pendant des siecles.

Arabe(s) et berbère en contact : le cas mauritanien

In Arabic, especially in dialects, cases of grammaticalization of verbs are extremely common. They are used to express time / aspectual / modal values, which often characterize dialectal areas more or less extended. We studied the grammaticalization of a verb which originally had the sense of 'to see'. This meaning is preserved in literary Arabic (where its pattern is rāˀa) and a number of modern dialects, but the word most commonly in use in this sense is now sāf. The replacement of the first word by the former is an important question for the history of dialects (Ferguson 1959, Cohen 1962, Kaye 1976). But at the same time there is another question to be asked about the grammaticalized uses of ṛa(a). When followed by an affixed pronoun, it was observed that it is often used in North Africa to introduce sentences like original demonstrative particles (Fischer 1959). The article first summarizes the studies of Moroccan and Algerian Arabic, where the phenomenon is well (but differently) developed as enunciative particle. It then shows that the grammaticalized uses of ṛa(a) are not limited to the western part of North Africa, or even the only Maghreb, especially if one considers the forms in (a)raˤ(a/i), whose origin is controversial. A remarkable variety of patterns and values is observed through the whole area dialect. This diversity of evolutions is very interesting to analyse, both for the study of the phenomena of grammaticalization and for the history of Arabic dialects of Africa.
