A description is given of the DEMOM media object data model, which aims at providing a uniform framework for managing different types of media data i.e. images, text, sound or graphics. According to DEMOM, media objects are defined as a class hierarchy of objects, i.e., images, text, sound, and graphics are subtypes of the general type media object. Representation-specific objects are regarded as subordinate types of the corresponding subtype, e.g., a SUN raster image in pixrect format is an instance of the subtype pixrect which is in turn a subtype of image. Using images as an example the authors discuss the media object hierarchy, the corresponding access operations, and implementation issues. Content-oriented search of media data on the basis of predicate calculus is considered as an essential part of DEMOM and hence briefly outlined. Finally, concerns related to the integration of alphanumeric and media objects are also included. >

DEMON - A Media Object Model Incorporating Natural Language Descriptions for Retrieval Support

: Current conventional Database Management Systems (DBMS) manage only alphanumeric data. However, data to be stored in the future is expected to include some multimedia form, such as images, graphics, sounds or signals. The structure and the semantics of the media data and the operations on that data are complex. It is not clear what requirements are needed in a DBMS to manage this kind of data. It is also not clear what is needed in the data model to support this kind of data; nor what the user interface should be for such a system. The goal of the Multimedia Database Management System project in the computer science department of the Naval Post Graduate School is to build into a Database Management System (DBMS) the capability to manage multimedia data, as well as the formatted data, and define operations on multimedia data. This thesis, focusing only on the media data of image and sound, first describes the operations of such a system, then discusses the general design of it, and finally outline the detailed design and implementation of the retrieval operation.

Design and Implementation of a Multimedia DBMS. Retrieval Management

This paper surveys current personal interactive mul-timedia technologies. The paper Iirst describes background technologies such as in mge and audio I, echnoh)-gies. Secondly, a deserlption of hardware and software architectures that involve multimedia is given. Finally, current major implementations of personal interactive mull,hned}a technologies such as lntel's DVI, IBMR's AVC, Apple's llyperCard, and Commodore's Amiga are described. The filture outlook for multimedia technologies is briefly discussed.

Survey of personal interactive multimedia technologies

This thesis represents one aspect of an exploration of the integration of unformatted data types, such as image, sound and signal, with more conventional formatted types in a single database. The focus of this thesis is the implementation of a prototype of a database employing a relational model that incorporates both formatted and unformatted data types. Initial research was limited to integration of image data. The prototype provides storage and retrieval capabilities, as well as a modest queryhandling capability.
