Improving diets with wild and cultivated biodiversity from across the landscape
Bronwen Powell,Shakuntala H. Thilsted,Amy Ickowitz,Céline Termote,Terry Sunderland,Anna Herforth +5 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors examine the literature on how biodiversity contributes to improved and diversified diets in developing countries and identify areas where evidence is lacking and ways to build synergies between nutrition-sensitive approaches and efforts to ensure sustainability of food systems and the natural environment.
Journal ArticleDOI
Dietary species richness as a measure of food biodiversity and nutritional quality of diets.
Carl Lachat,Jessica E. Raneri,Jessica E. Raneri,Katherine Smith,Patrick Kolsteren,Patrick Van Damme,Patrick Van Damme,Kaat Verzelen,Daniela Penafiel,Daniela Penafiel,Wouter Vanhove,Gina Kennedy,Danny Hunter,Francis Oduor Odhiambo,Gervais Ntandou-Bouzitou,Bernard De Baets,Disna Ratnasekera,Roseline Remans,Roseline Remans,Céline Termote +19 more
TL;DR: Compared with Simpson’s index of diversity and functional diversity, species richness (SR) showed stronger associations and better diagnostic properties with micronutrient adequacy, and is recommended as the most appropriate measure of food biodiversity in diets.
Journal ArticleDOI
The Contribution of Forests and Trees to Sustainable Diets
Barbara Vinceti,Céline Termote,Amy Ickowitz,Bronwen Powell,Katja Kehlenbeck,Danny Hunter,Danny Hunter +6 more
TL;DR: The paper identifies research gaps and makes recommendations to enhance the contribution of forest foods to sustainable diets through increased awareness and better integration of information and knowledge on nutritious forest foods into national nutrition strategies and programs.
Journal ArticleDOI
Born to Eat Wild: An Integrated Conservation Approach to Secure Wild Food Plants for Food Security and Nutrition.
Teresa Borelli,Danny Hunter,Bronwen Powell,Tiziana Ulian,Efisio Mattana,Céline Termote,Lukas Pawera,Lukas Pawera,Daniela Moura de Oliveira Beltrame,Daniela Penafiel,Daniela Penafiel,Ayfer Tan,Mary Taylor,Johannes M.M. Engels +13 more
TL;DR: This paper reviews recent efforts being undertaken in several countries to build evidence of the importance of WFPs, while providing examples of cross-sectoral cooperation and multi-stakeholder approaches that are contributing to advance their conservation and sustainable use.
Journal ArticleDOI
Assessing the potential of wild foods to reduce the cost of a nutritionally adequate diet: an example from eastern Baringo District, Kenya.
TL;DR: To study the role of wild food biodiversity in achieving a cost reduction of a nutritionally adequate diet for women and young children in Kenya using linear programming, an application of linear programming to screen available wild foods for meeting recommended nutrient intakes at a minimal cost was illustrated.
