In the real world, a realistic setting for computer vision or multimedia recognition problems is that we have some classes containing lots of training data and many classes contain a small amount of training data. Therefore, how to use frequent classes to help learning rare classes for which it is harder to collect the training data is an open question. Learning with Shared Information is an emerging topic in machine learning, computer vision and multimedia analysis. There are different level of components that can be shared during concept modeling and machine learning stages, such as sharing generic object parts, sharing attributes, sharing transformations, sharing regularization parameters and sharing training examples, etc. Regarding the specific methods, multi-task learning, transfer learning and deep learning can be seen as using different strategies to share information. These learning with shared information methods are very effective in solving real-world large-scale problems. This special issue aims at gathering the recent advances in learning with shared information methods and their applications in computer vision and multimedia analysis. Both state-of-the-art works, as well as literature reviews, are welcome for submission. Papers addressing interesting real-world computer vision and multimedia applications are especially encouraged. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:  • Multi-task learning or transfer learning for large-scale computer vision and multimedia analysis • Deep learning for large-scale computer vision and multimedia analysis • Multi-modal approach for large-scale computer vision and multimedia analysis • Different sharing strategies, e.g., sharing generic object parts, sharing attributes, sharing transformations, sharing regularization parameters and sharing training examples, • Real-world computer vision and multimedia applications based on learning with shared information, e.g., event detection, object recognition, object detection, action recognition, human head pose estimation, object tracking, location-based services, semantic indexing. • New datasets and metrics to evaluate the benefit of the proposed sharing ability for the specific computer vision or multimedia problem. • Survey papers regarding the topic of learning with shared information.  Authors who are unsure whether their planned submission is in scope may contact the guest editors prior to the submission deadline with an abstract, in order to receive feedback.

Chronic or intermittent hyperglycemia is associated with the development of diabetic complications. Several signaling pathways can be altered by having hyperglycemia in different tissues, producing oxidative stress, the formation of advanced glycation end products (AGEs), as well as the secretion of the pro-inflammatory cytokines and cellular death (pathological autophagy and/or apoptosis). However, the signaling pathways that are directly triggered by hyperglycemia appear to have a pivotal role in diabetic complications due to the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), oxidative stress, and cellular death. The present review will discuss the role of cellular death in diabetic complications, and it will suggest the cause and the consequences between the hyperglycemia-induced signaling pathways and cell death. The signaling pathways discussed in this review are to be described step-by-step, together with their respective inhibitors. They involve diacylglycerol, the activation of protein kinase C (PKC) and NADPH-oxidase system, and the consequent production of ROS. This was initially entitled the “dangerous metabolic route in diabetes”. The historical usages and the recent advancement of new drugs in controlling possible therapeutical targets have been highlighted, in order to evaluate the evolution of knowledge in this sensitive area. It has recently been shown that the metabolic responses to stimuli (i.e., hyperglycemia) involve an integrated network of signaling pathways, in order to define the exact responses. Certain new drugs have been experimentally tested—or suggested and proposed—for their ability to modulate the possible biochemical therapeutical targets for the downregulation of retinopathy, nephropathy, neuropathy, heart disease, angiogenesis, oxidative stress, and cellular death. The aim of this study was to critically and didactically evaluate the exact steps of these signaling pathways and hence mark the indicated sites for the actions of such drugs and their possible consequences. This review will emphasize, besides others, the therapeutical targets for controlling the signaling pathways, when aimed at the downregulation of ROS generation, oxidative stress, and, consequently, cellular death—with all of these conditions being a problem in diabetes.

Five new cladiellane diterpenes, (1R*,2R*,3R*,6S*,7S*,9R*,10R*,14R*)-3- acetoxy-6-(3-methylbutanoyloxy)cladiell-11(17)-en-7-ol [2], (1R*,2R*,3R*,6S*,7S*,9R*, 10R*,14R*)-3-butanoyloxycladiell-11(17)-en-6,7-diol [3], (1R*,2R*,3R*,6S*,9R*,10R*,14R*)-3-acetoxycladiell-7(16),11(1 7)-dien-6-ol [4], 3-acetoxycladiell-11(17)-en-6-one [5], and its stereoisomer [6], have been isolated from the soft coral Cladiella australis collected on the coasts of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands of the Indian Ocean. In addition, sclerophytins C [7] and E [8], reported earlier from Sclerophytum capitalis, were also isolated. The structures of these metabolites were elucidated by interpretation of spectral data.

New Cladiellane Diterpenes from the Soft Coral Cladiella australis of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands

The soft coral Sinularia ovispiculata collected on the coasts of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands of the Indian Ocean yielded two new metabolites, (2E,7E)-4, 11-dihydroxy-1,12-oxidocembra-2,7-diene [4] and (2E,7E) -4, 11-dihydroxy-1,1 2-oxidocembra-2,7,15-triene [7], in addition to three known cembrane diterpenes 1-3, four polyhydroxysterols, (24S)-24-methylcholestane-3β,5α,6β,25-tetraol, (24S)-24-methylcholestane-3β,5α,6β,25-tetraol 25-monoacetate, 24-methylenecholest-5-ene-3β,7β,16β-triol-3-O-α-L-fucopyranoside, and 24-methylenecholestane-1α,3β,5α,6β-tetraol (numersterol A), and pregnenolone. Structural elucidation of all compounds was carried out through spectral analysis and chemical reactions

Metabolites of the soft coral Sinularia ovispiculata from the Indian Ocean

In this work, we dealt with the tracking of single object in a sequence of frames either from a live camera or a previously saved video. A moving object is detected frame-by-frame with high accuracy and efficiency using Median approximation technique. As soon as the object has been detected, the same is tracked by kalman filter estimation technique along with a more accurate Template Matching algorithm. The templates are dynamically generated for this purpose. This guarantees any change in object pose which does not be hindered from tracking procedure. The system is capable of handling entry and exit of an object. Such a tracking scheme is cost effective and it can be used as an automated video conferencing system and also has application as a surveillance tool. Several trials of the tracking show that the approach is correct and extremely fast, and it's a more robust performance throughout the experiments.

Object Tracking System Using Approximate Median Filter, Kalman Filter and Dynamic Template Matching

Relevance of ‘face recognition’ (FR) in the modern world requirements is presented as a case of human machine interaction. Physical conditions that influence the face recognition process regarding the facial features, illumination changes and viewing angles etc. are discussed. Face recognition process predominantly depends on machine perception i.e. information through an array of pixels with respect to the facial image. Details of eigenface approach through the involvement of contemporary algebraic and statistical analysis are revisited. Methodology involved in the Principal Component Analysis and advantages of exposing the data to incremental training (using PCA) are discussed. A model for the implementation of IPCA over the face databases is proposed to estimate its performance for the face recognition process. Performance of the present model is studied in the domain of Euclidean distance, decay parameter, recognition rate, eigenvalues and overall computational time. Present IPCA model administered over standard ORL, FERET databases along with that over the JNTU face database with large number of face images revealed relative performance. The merit of present IPCA is inferred through enhanced recognition rate and reduced complexity (in the algorithm), intelligent eigenvectors and lesser computational time. The results are presented in the wake of the body of data available with other methods.

Performance evaluation of incremental training method for face recognition using PCA

An overview of state of art in computerized object recognition techniques regarding digital images is revised. Advantages of shape based techniques are discussed. Importance of ―Fourier Descriptor‖ (FD) for the shape based object representation is described. A survey for the available shape signature assignment methods with Fourier descriptors is presented. Details for the design of shape signature containing the crucial information of corners of the object are depicted. A novel shape signature is designed basing on the Farthest Point Angle (FPA) which corresponds to the contour point. FPA signature considers the computation of the angle between the line drawn from each contour point and the line drawn from the farthest corner point. Histogram for each 15o angle conceiving the information of the object is constructed. FPA signature is evaluated for three standard databases; viz., two in Kimia {K-99, K-216} and one in MPEG CE-1 Set B. The performance of the present FPA method estimated through recognition rate, time and degree of matching and is found to be higher.
