Effect of Life Stress on the Sleeping Disorder of University Student

Purpose: Purpose of this descriptive research is to examine internet use and sleep related influencing factors of university students and to prepare for the basic data to develop nursing intervention which could be helpful to sleep management which is a major factor of university student’s health management. Method: Study subjects were targeting 228 university students and the correlation between internet addiction disorder and sleep quality, excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS), insomnia was analyzed using Pearson‘s Correlation and logistic regression analysis was conducted with the variables which are predicted to affect the excessive daytime sleepiness(EDS) and insomnia like gender, internet addiction disorder and sleep aspect. Results: Sleep quality, excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS), insomnia and internet addiction disorder showed significant correlation. Logistic regression result identified the influencing factor of excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) and insomnia as internet addiction disorder and it increases excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) risk by 1.033(OR 1.033, 95%CI 1.07-1.059) and insomnia risk by 1.022 (OR 1.022, 95%CI 1.002-1.042).

The Relation of Internet Addiction, Insomnia and Excessive Daytime Sleepiness in Korean College Students

Objectives: Though there are many studies about sleep disorder, no research has been performed on the utilization of oriental medicine as a treatment. Therefore, the oriental medical treatment pattern of Korean patients with sleep disorders was examined herein using the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service (HIRAS).Methods: The medical records of patients with sleep disorders (G47) or nonorganic sleep disorders (F51) as a main diagnosis were adopted from the HIRAS database from 2011 to 2013. Analysis was per-formed on the number of patients and cost per patient, with comparison between oriental and western medicine in terms of gender, age, patient care service type, and hospital type. Results: 1) Regarding sleep disorders, the medical visi ts and insurance charges have been increasing. Western medicine was utilized 8 times more often than oriental medicine during 3 years. 2) There were 2.5 times more women than men. 3) Among all ages, the 50∼59 year group had the highest representation. 4) In comparison of average portions of patient care type over 3 years, outpatients were the majority, while the number of visits of outpatients and hospitalization has been increasing. 5) Comparison of average portion of oriental hospital type over 3 years revealed oriental clinics to be used most. The use of general hospitals was higher in western medicine treatment, while public health centers used oriental medicine more. 6) Regarding average oriental medical cost per patient over 3 years, the total was 88,000 won, with 353,000 won for hospitalization and 85,000 won for outpatients. The outpatient cost has been increasing. 7) In line with 6, oriental medical hospitals cost 126,000 won, local clinics were 85,000 won, and etc. was 95,000 won. Average costs of all types have increased dur-ing 3 years, except oriental medical hospitals in 2013.Conclusions: This study provided objective information about the epidemiologic characteristic of ori-ental medicine used for treatment of sleep disorder. Oriental Medical Treatment Pattern of Korean Patients with Sleep Disorders

To evaluate the effects of sleep habits on the powers of beta waves and the sensory motor rhythm of the electroencephalogram (EEG), female college student subjects were divided into four groups, according to their sleep habits, as follows: GSHG (Good Sleep Habit Group), CSHG (Common Sleep Habit Group: late bedtime), CSDG (Cognitive Sleep Disorder-Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrome Group), and NSDG (Non-cognitive Sleep Disorder-Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrome Group). Brain function was stimulated by reading a book for 3 min in the morning (9~12 am) and the EEG was measured. According to the results, the powers of the beta waves and sensory motor rhythm were not different during the resting period among the four groups. However, during the reading stimulation period, the powers of beta waves and the sensory motor rhythm in the GSHG were significantly greater than in the other groups (p<0.05). Beta powers during stimulation also increased in all brain areas in the GSHG (p<0.05). Interestingly, these were decreased in the frontal and temporal lobes in the CSHG by the reading stimulation (p<0.05). On the other hand, sensory motor rhythm, which represents focusing efficacy, only improved in the GSHG. These results indicate that the brain’s focusing function during the reading stimulation was not properly operating in the morning in the female college students who had a delayed bedtime and bad sleep habits.

Effects of Sleep Habits on EEG Sensory Motor Rhythm in Female College Students

Influencing factor of excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) and insomnia in Korean College Students

Objectives: We attempted to study sleep habits and insomnia-associated factors in Korean rural adult population. Methods : In 1,441 adult subjects of three rural communities selected by cluster sampling, we administered an epidemiologic survey using questionnaire methods from July 14, 1996 to July 28, 1996. Results : 1) Mean sleep latency and mean time to sleep again after awakening during nocturnal sleep were longer in females than in males. Females suffered more frequently from insomnia symptom, awakening during nocturnal sleep. morning headache, dysphoric mood in the morning, and the feeling of 'not refreshed' on waking-up than males. 2) The older age group (defined as those older than 65 years) was found to have earlier bed-time, longer sleep latency, more frequent nocturia, longer time to sleep again after awakening during nocturnal sleep, and more frequent insomnia symptom. 3) The presence of insomnia symptom more than once a week was significantly associated with suffering from physical illness, being divorced-separated-widowed, frequently feeling depressed, nocturia, or low education level. 4) In multiple logistic regression analysis, old age, being female, low education level, frequently feeling depressed, and nocturia were independently associated with the presence of insomnia symptom more than once a week. Conclusion : We conclude that, in a Korean rural adult population, insomnia symptom increases with age and females usually suffer more from insomnia symptom than males. In addition, low education level, feeling depressed mood frequently, and nocturia are found to be significantly associated independently with the presence of insomnia symptom more than once a week.
