A method for ongoing power control for a communication station with a multiple antenna array, the power control using a method for signal quality estimation applicable for angle modulated signals. One aspect of the ongoing power control method is applicable for the uplink and includes separating the joint determination of a receive weight vector and ongoing power control into a receive weight vector determining part and a separate transmit power adjustment part. In one embodiment, the ongoing power control method for the downlink includes separating the joint determination of a receive weight vector and ongoing power control into a receive weight vector determining part and a separate transmit power adjustment part. The method starts with one part, for example transmit power assignment. Receive weight vector determination is carried out with this assigned transmit power, and the new weights used. An estimate of the resulting received signal quality is obtained and used for new ongoing power adjustment. Another aspect is applicable for the downlink and includes one aspect of the ongoing power control method is applicable for the uplink and includes separating the determination of a complete transmit weight vector including the vector of relative transmit weights and the scaling to use with the relative transmit weights into a part for determining a set of relative transmit weights and a separate transmit power adjustment part that determines the scaling factor.

Power control with signal quality estimation for smart antenna communication systems

The present invention provides event-based or driven reporting of mobile station measurements. A mobile station measures one or more radio-related parameters for one or more cells in a radio access network. The mobile station evaluates the measured radio-related parameter with respect to a predetermined condition or event and determines that the predetermined condition is satisfied or that the event has occurred. Based on that evaluation, the mobile radio sends a report to the radio access network. Accordingly, the occurrence of an event and/or the satisfaction of a condition triggers the sending of the report to the network. That way, the network receives the information so that it can take timely and appropriate action without sending outdated or redundant measurement reports that do not convey relevant or new information.

Mobile station measurements with event-based reporting

A method for routing enhanced 9-1-1 (E9-1-1) calls from a mobile emergency user to a Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP). The method is directed specifically for use in a wireless communication system which includes a plurality of base stations each of which is operative to communicate with corresponding mobile units within its coverage area over air interface channels. When all interface channels of the corresponding base stations of the mobile emergency user are busy, the location of the emergency mobile user will determined in cooperation with a Location Adjunct Processor (LAP). All other mobile units communicating with the corresponding base stations will be identified. Predetermined uplink and downlink RF measurements for each of these mobile units will thereafter be extracted and by reference to the same it may be determined which of the mobile units are also within the coverage areas of neighboring base stations. It may further be determined which of the neighboring base stations can support additional mobile units. Once provided with this information, automatic link transfers/handoffs/handovers will be initiated so as to open an interface channel with a currently blocked E9-1-1 call.

Method for routing emergency calls during busy interface channel conditions

A method for use in a network covering a region, said region comprising a plurality of areas, a user being assigned to at least oen of said area and having associated therewith a plurality of candidate areas to which the user may be assigned, said method comprising the steps of receiving information identifying said plurality of candidate areas; estimating for each candidate area a parameter, said parameter assuming that said user is assigned to said candidate area; and prioritising said plurality of candidate areas which takes into account the estimated value of said parameter.

A simple and flexible over-air protocol for use with a mobile telephone system, having hand-held telephones (102) in a microcell or other type of cellular communication system. A method in which user stations (102) communicate with one or more base stations (104) to place and receive telephone calls, in which the user stations (102) are provided a secure voice or data link and have the ability to handoff calls between base stations (104) while such calls are in progress. Each base station (104) has a set of 'air channels' to which it transmits in sequence. The air channels supported by each base station (104) are called that base station's polling loop. A user station (102) receives general polling information on an unoccupied air channel, transmists responsive information to the base station, and awaits acknowledgement from the base station. Each base station (104) may therefore simultaneously maintain communication with as many user stations (102) as there are air channels in its polling loop. The ability of a user station (102) to communicate on any unoccupied air channel makes the protocol air-channel agile, while the stability of user station and base station clocks may define air channels, gaps, and minor frames.

Each cell has an assigned classification that determines its inclusion in a measurement list for handing off. The candidate cells, which are selected from the measurement list are given priority level assignments. The priority levels are implemented by the candidate neighboring cells measured RF signal strength; and the order of handing off is arranged in accordance with the adjusted RF signal strength.

A method and system for handing off an on-going communication from a serving cell to a neighboring cell of a cellular communication system having mobile units with a scanning capability. A dynamic threshold is calculated for effecting the handoff under certain operating criteria. The minimum attenuation level of the mobile unit and the minimum level permitted by a neighboring cell is used in selecting the dynamic threshold.

Dynamic thresholding for mobile assisted handoff in a digital cellular communication system

A method and system for handing off an on-going communication from a serving cell to a neighboring cell of a cellular communication system having scanning receivers associated with each base transceiver station. A dynamic threshold is calculated for effecting the handoff in accordance with various operating conditions. The current mobile minimum attentuation level, (MT) the minimum permissible attenuation level of a serving (MS) cell and a neighboring cell (MN), together with the RF signal strength of the mobile unit at the neighboring cell (RSSI-NBR) and the serving cell (RSSI-SRV) are used in calculating a dynamic threshold (RSSI-THP).

Method and system for effecting handoff in a cellular communication system

Cellular handoff is improved by tailing or adapting the measurement time based on the characteristics of the received signal intensity or power. More particularly, base stations typically measure mobile signal power in order to determine the necessity for handoff and the identity of a new cell. The measurement time must be of a duration which is sufficient to characterize the environment of the mobile. In accordance with the invention, the duration of the measurement time is determined from the received signal itself. Once the duration of the measurement time is determined, that data may be passed to a target cell along with other handoff data.
