A welding training system includes one or more welding operator device which provides positional feedback relevant to a quality weld. The positional feedback is analyzed and, when the positional feedback is outside of a predetermined range, a signal is provided to the welding operator. In one embodiment, tactile feedback is provided in a welding gun.

Apparatus for monitoring manual arc welding procedures for providing to the welder real-time monitoring of the welding characteristics to achieve optimum welds. The voltage and current conditions of the welding arc are instantly transferred within the visual range of the helmet wearing operator by the use of lights, illuminated bar graphs, light projections, illuminated see-through displays, or the like, located in proximity to the helmet viewing window wherein, through such monitoring, the operator is constantly aware of the arc conditions during welding.

Arc welding monitoring system

A welding system including an arc monitoring, training, and control system is disclosed. The welding system includes a power supply, controller, and associated memory. When a weld is performed, the weld command and weld feedback parameters can be stored in the memory, along with associated alarm limit values. During subsequent welds, the input weld commands and actual feedback values can be compared to the established limits, and a fault signal provided to an operator or supervisor when the value exceeds the established limits. The fault signals can be used for training operators, as well as providing monitoring signals, and can be stored with weld data in a database for later analysis. In addition, collected weld data can be used to determine when to clean, repair, or replace consumables, including, for example, contact tips, wire drive liners, and drive rolls, and to monitor usage of wire and gas.

Automatic weld arc monitoring system

This invention relates to a welding unit comprising a welding device (1) and a protection unit (28), in particular a protective screen (29) for an operator or a welder. The protection unit (28) has an electrically operable, commandable- and/or controllable visor (31) with a control device (32). The welding device (1) or the welding unit is at least composed of an electrical source (2), a welding torch (10) and a control unit. The protection unit (28) has a transmitter and/or a receiver (33), which is connected to the control device (32). The transmitter and/or receiver (33) is connected to the welding unit or welding device (1) or the welding torch (10) via a connecting cable (35) or by wireless means. Darkening of the protective visor (31) occurs after the control unit or the welding torch sends out a signal to the transmitter and/or receiver (33) which is relayed to the control device (32) after activation of a start switch (27) disposed on a welding torch (10) or on the welding device (1) or by virtue of a start command.

Data display on a welding screen

A weld metal cooling rate indication system is provided for a welding mace. The welding machine has a torch which is capable of producing a weld bead and has a speed sensor which senses the speed at which the torch travels as selected by an operator. The indication system includes a device for continuously sensing a profile of temperatures along the weld bead, this profile including a predetermined weld temperature. Another device receives the temperature profile and travel speed of the torch information for calculating and producing a signal which represents rate of change of weld temperature at the predetermined weld temperature. A range of acceptable rates of change of weld temperatures at the predetermined weld temperature is provided so that the rate of change of weld temperature at the predetermined weld temperature can be compared with this range. A device is then provided which is responsive to the comparing information for indicating whether the rate of change of weld temperature is within, above, or below the range of acceptable rates of change of weld temperatures. With this arrangement the welding operator can adjust the speed of the welding torch so that a proper rate of change of weld temperature is maintained at all times to increase the quality of the weld.

A method of welding metals wherein the size and shape of a weld pool as w as the traversing of the arc from one metal to the other is commanded magnetically by predetermined data, which data is updated by observing and characterizing isotherms in the weld pool, comparing the observed isotherms with a predetermined set of desired isotherms and then updating the command data for optimum performance.
