A spring-mass-damper system is coupled to any one or all of the fluid flow control, check valve or vane diffuser to dampen low amplitude flow disturbances of the compressible fluid.

The present invention provides composite muffler systems formed of a long fiber thermoplastic. Long fiber thermoplastic technology allows the fibers, to maintain a length sufficient to provide structural strength at lower fiber loading. The long fiber thermoplastic material for forming composite muffler systems also provides increased impact strength and creep resistance as well as chemical and thermal resistance. Mufflers molded with long fiber thermoplastics demonstrate improved dimensional stability as compared to known short fiber based moldings. One suitable muffler structure is a multi-piece muffler assembly including at least one long fiber thermoplastic shell section. In accordance with the present invention, the long fiber thermoplastic material and moldings may also be combined with over-molding of preforms of unidirectional or woven inlays, which provide local structural performance. The use of such preforms is particularly suited to use in the manufacture of high temperature, structural articles such as bumper muffler combinations.

A silencer device is installed into the discharge pipe of a centrifugal compressor by first installing a channel shaped frame in the discharge pipe and then sliding the silencer device into the frame to be contained for operational use. The orientation and placement of the frame and its contained silencer device is parallel with the direction of flow to thereby reduce the resulting pressure drop, and it is placed near a turn in the discharge pipe such that the sound will tend to be reflected from the discharge pipe to cause multiple passes through the silencer device and thereby enhance its absorptive performance. The absorptive material within the silencer device is protected from erosion by a surrounding cloth bag composed of a fine weave Nomex material.

The reverberation room is a particularly convenient environment in which to determine the sound power produced by such sources provided that the measurement uncertainty can be reduced to an acceptable value. If the measurement uncertainty lies within standardized limits, the room is said to “qualify” for measurements on sources of discrete‐frequency sound. The causes of the various uncertainties in the determination of sound power have been considered. Reverberation‐room qualification for determination of sound power of sources of discrete‐frequency sound

The acoustic power flowing from a monopole source is proportional to the radiation resistance presented to the source. This value is determined by the modal structure and the acoustic impedance of the walls of the chamber. The rotating sound diffuser modulates the modal structure and with it, the radiation resistance. Comparison of the time average of the radiation resistance as the monopole source location is changed with and without the diffuser rotating indicates the effectiveness of a given diffuser design in removing the dependence of acoustic power output on the source position. The rotating sound diffuser evaluated was a symmetrical biconical surface of revolution rotating at speeds up to 30 rpm. Fifty percent of the surface area of the diffuser was covered with ribbed fiberglass, the remainder was left uncovered.
