In this study we explore the issue of the core components for an introductory survey course in private security. Using Hirsh's (1987) conceptual framework of cultural literacy, we question whether there is a body of knowledge considered central to security education by academics and practitioners. Data were drawn from three sources. The first involved benchmarking existing and available introductory textbooks in security. The second source of data was a large national sample of more than 5,600 security managers and directors representing various organizations, including Fortune 1,000 companies. We asked security professionals to identify the important topic areas or subjects that constitute the core of private security course work in the undergraduate program. Designing an introductory survey course in private security

With the growing requirements for protection generated by legislation such as the 1974 Privacy Act, the increasing complexity of computer and data communications applications, and increasing awareness regarding computer vulnerabilities, the discipline of computer security is achieving independent recognition. Current data processing literature is a rich source of information. Articles and papers regarding security, design of software protection, operational practices and auditing number in the thousands. Most of them are very narrow in scope or so general that they are of little use.

Computer security: a survey

This study explores a solution to a growing problem involving the landscapes of many prominent landmarks in America. The probability that terrorists will target and attack public and private sites has mandated increased security presence. The initial response was to surround sensitive facilities with barriers and guards. Thus, the images of these sites intended to be publicly open and welcoming are being transformed to seemingly modern fortresses. To date, the solution to the problem has focused on sophisticated engineering and electronics to help protect vulnerable architecture. Meanwhile, the potential contribution of the landscape architecture profession has not been fully recognized. This thesis develops a planning process to guide the integration of site design and physical security. It describes the role of the landscape architect on design teams charged with the complex task of protecting against terrorism. The document provides the landscape architect with a flowchart, site images, and a step-by-step process that leads to reconciliation of conflicting needs. The thesis culminates with a conceptual schematic site design that demonstrates how the site planning and design process proposed in this thesis can be a mechanism to achieve both secure and socially desirable landscapes. This thesis helps resolve the current dilemma of how to maintain an adequate degree of security while preserving a sense of openness on a site.
