Digital watermarking is a key ingredient to copyright protection. It provides a solution to illegal copying of digital material and has many other useful applications such as broadcast monitoring and the recording of electronic transactions. Now, for the first time, there is a book that focuses exclusively on this exciting technology. Digital Watermarking covers the crucial research findings in the field: it explains the principles underlying digital watermarking technologies, describes the requirements that have given rise to them, and discusses the diverse ends to which these technologies are being applied. As a result, additional groundwork is laid for future developments in this field, helping the reader understand and anticipate new approaches and applications.

Digital Watermarking

The objective of this paper is to give a comprehensive introduction to applied cryptography with an engineer or computer scientist in mind. The emphasis is on the knowledge needed to create practical systems which supports integrity, confidentiality, or authenticity. Topics covered includes an introduction to the concepts in cryptography, attacks against cryptographic systems, key use and handling, random bit generation, encryption modes, and message authentication codes. In this paper, we present a new approach, the image CRC noise tolerant message authentication code (image CRC-NTMAC), to ensure the credibility of multimedia, such as images. The image CRC-NTMAC can accurately identify the specific regions of the image that have been modified and visibly display the authentication result. Moreover, the tolerance to the low rate random errors, often allowed with multimedia objects, and the sensitivity to the high noise (as forgery) allow the image CRC-NTMAC distinguishing between malicious forgeries and minor communication errors. Examples are provided for the image CRC-NTMAC demonstrating the ability to distinguish between random errors and forgeries. The image CRC-NTMAC improves on the recently developed NTMAC. As with the NTMAC, the image CRC-NTMAC can tolerate a modest number of errors. However, it has thousands of times lower collision rates than the NT-MAC does, thus providing much higher possibility to detect the changes, and tolerating more random channel errors.

The Crc-Ntmac for Image Tamper Proofing and Authentication

Based on a recently developed class of sorting networks, new VLSI architectures suitable for order statistic filtering are developed. The major advantage of these architectures is minimal response-time regardless of the number of stages in the pipeline; an effective characteristic for implementing recursive order statistic filters. The devised word-parallel architecture is the only one introduced to date that is capable of operating in both recursive and standard modes with optimal throughput. The proposed architectures are also suitable for implementing order statistic filters with multiple overlapping windows. >

VLSI architectures for recursive and multiple-window order statistic filtering

We present a rate insensitive method for detecting steganography using plusmn1 embedding. plusmn1 embedding is generally considered to be difficult to detect. In prior work, we developed a high performing method based on statistics computed by a lossless image compressor. However, the method suffered a weakness that the embedding rate needed to be known. In this work, we introduce improved classifiers that work without knowing the rate. The overall classification rate is excellent for the database of images studied.

Rate insensitive steganalysis of ±1 embedding in images

We present a two-part method for lossless image compression: the first is a simple transformation based on JPEG-LS and the second is the use of a general purpose file compressor such as gzip, bzip2 or rk. The transformation is invertible and uses only integer arithmetic. It achieves no compression directly; however, on some images, it can significantly reduce the entropy. The gzip, bzip2, and rk compressors, with and without the transformation, are tested against JPEG-LS on a standard data set. Overall rk (both with and without the transformation) is best. Furthermore, by combining the various algorithms, we obtain compression that is 15% better than JPEG-LS alone.
