A system and method for measuring thermal distributions of an electronic device during operation is disclosed. The system includes an electronic device, a heat sink adjacent to the electronic device and an electrical-insulating layer disposed on the electronic device so as to separate the electronic device and the heat sink. The system further includes a plurality of thermal sensors located on the electrical-insulating layer, each of the plurality of thermal sensors in a different location. The plurality of thermal sensors is located within one or more thin film circuit layers disposed adjacent to the electrical insulating layer. The system further includes a module for receiving thermal information from the plurality of thermal sensors during operation of the electronic device. The system further includes a processor coupled to the module for generating a thermal distribution of the electronic device based on the thermal information received from the plurality of thermal sensors.

Methods and apparatus for compensating a radiation sensor for ambient temperature variations. Ambient temperature variations may produce undesirable artifacts in electronic signals output by a radiation sensor. In some cases, such artifacts may detrimentally reduce the dynamic range of the sensor and/or processing circuitry associated with the sensor with respect to radiation of interest. The radiation sensor may be compensated for such undesirable artifacts by, for example, adding an appropriate offset to a sensor bias voltage or a sensor bias current, and/or controlling a temperature of the radiation sensor, based on variations in the ambient temperature.

An infra-red imaging camera comprises focusing optics for gathering infra-red energy from an external scene, and an uncooled and unshielded detector arranged to detect infra red energy. Internal temperature sensing together with approximation of the temperature response of the camera provides a time varying calibration that allows the infra-red energy received at the detector to be used as a temperature measurement for objects in the camera's field of view.

In one example, the radiation sensor is a thermal sensor having at least one property that varies as a function of temperature. The thermal sensor outputs signals based on thermal radiation of interest from a particular radiating body in its view. These signals may contain significant undesirable components due in part to changes in temperature of the sensor itself. Methods and apparatus of the invention compensate the sensor for temperature variations of the sensor that are not due to the radiation of interest, so as to significantly reduce undesirable components in the instantaneous signals output by the sensor. In one example, this is accomplished without thermally stabilizing the sensor itself (i.e., dynamic temperature compensation). In another example, the sensor is thermally stabilized selectively at various predetermined temperatures as a function of the ambient temperature in the proximity of the sensor.

Methods and apparatus for compensating a radiation sensor for temperature variations of the sensor

One embodiment of the invention is directed to methods and apparatus for determining a variation of a calibration parameter of a pixel of the thermal sensor during operation of the imaging apparatus, after an initial calibration procedure. Another embodiment of the invention is directed to methods and apparatus for calculating a gain calibration parameter using first and second ambient temperature values and respective first and second resistance values for a pixel of a sensor. A further embodiment of the invention is directed to calculating an offset calibration parameter for at least one pixel using a gain of the at least one pixel between first and second times and an ambient temperature at a third time, wherein the pixel is exposed to both scene and ambient radiation at the third time.

A focal plane array and integrated circuit, located along the optical path for receiving the transmitted radiation, responsively produces image signals from the transmitted radiation. The integrated circuit includes apparatus for converting the image signals into digital image data at digital image data outputs.
