Floating nut insert

A top and bottom disk with central bores axially aligned for receipt of a through bolt fastener. The disks have descending and ascending integral cylindrical tubes respectively. The descending top disk tube has a side wall vertical channel leading to an eccentric hole in the top disk at one end. The inner diameter of the top disk cylindrical tube is slightly larger than the outer diameter of the bottom disk cylindrical tube and receives the bottom disk tube in axial alignment within a through hole in a two-sided honeycomb panel. Ridges on a surface of each disk, in contact with a honeycomb panel side, seal the disk in place after epoxy is inserted into the eccentric hole in the top disk.

An improved collapsible threaded insert device for securing items to a plate-like workpiece of the type consisting of an annular flange portion integrally attached to an internally threaded, collapsible shank portion. The improvement comprises the addition of various mechanical gripping means formed on the undersurface of the flange to frictionally engage the workpiece when the threaded insert device has been collapsibly secured thereto, thus, increasing the resistance to rotation of said insert within the workpiece.

A honeycomb panel with a threaded fastener secured thereto wherein the fastener has a flanged portion (12) abutting the outer surface of the upper plate member of the panel and its bulged portion (17) within the core of the honeycomb panel but cooperative with the flange (12) to captively secure such fastener into the honeycomb panel.

A two-piece mount is provided that is adapted to have the two pieces scre together and has a central bore through one of the two pieces for mounting an insert therein. Each of the two pieces of the mount has means for containing adhesive to allow the two mount pieces to be bonded to a composite structure when the two pieces have been mounted relative to the composite structure.

[Also in Division B3] A one-piece fastener D is secured in a blind bore 60 of a sandwich panel A, and comprises a head 28 having flutes 30, a weakened section 62, and a screw-threaded blind bore 36. The fastener is installed by a tool, comprising an anvil 71, a nut 73 having a left-hand thread, and a bolt 75, which co-operates with the nut, and is screwed into the fastener. In operation with the fastener screwed on to bolt 75, the former is passed through a hole 19 in the panel and a hammer blow is struck on the bolt until the skin 15 is dimpled. Bolt 75 is rotated in the direction of arrow 78, with the anvil held stationary, the bolt is retracted through the anvil, and the portion 62 of the fastener collapses, thus locking flutes 30 in skin 15.
