A stable, nonreactive, thermoplastic polymer blend comprising from about 10 to about 95 percent by weight of a superabsorbent, thermoplastic polymeric composition and from about 90 to about 5 percent by weight of at least one thermoplastic polymer. The superabsorbent, thermoplastic polymeric composition preferably comprises: (A) from about 86 to about 98 percent by weight, based on the total weight of the composition, of a poly(oxyethylene) diol soft segment having a weight average molecular weight in the range of from about 5,000 to about 50,000; and (B) from about 2 to about 14 percent by weight, based on the total weight of the composition, of a hard segment which has a melting point above ambient temperature and below the temperature at which decomposition of either the composition or the soft segment takes place, is essentially insoluble in water, and phase separates from the soft segment, said hard segment being selected from the group consisting of polyurethanes, polyamides, polyesters, polyureas, and combinations thereof; wherein the soft and hard segments are covalently bound together by means of urethane, amide, ester, or secondary urea linkages or combinations thereof. The blends are especially well suited for the preparation of nonwoven webs by meltblowing, coforming and spunbonding processes.

Tacky microspheres having pendant hydrophilic polymeric or oligomeric moieties

Nonwoven assemblies bonded with water dispersible or sensitive hot melt adhesives comprising 50-100 parts of a graft copolymer of about 40-85% of at least one vinyl monomer and about 15-60% of at least one water soluble polyalkylene oxide polymer, and about 0-50 parts by weight of tackifying resin. The compositions may also be employed as water sensitive binders in the manufacture of the nonwoven. Vinyl acetate is the preferred vinyl monomer whereas ethylene oxide homo- or copolymers are the preferred polyalkylene oxide. The use of tackifying resin is optional and may be undesirable for many of the applications.

Water sensitive hot melt adhesives for nonwoven applications

A water-dispersible hot melt adhesive comprises 75-95 parts of a graft copolymer of about 40-80% vinyl monomer and about 20-60% by weight of water-soluble polyalkylene oxide polymer, and 5-25 parts by weight tackifying resin. The water-soluble polyalkylene oxide polymer has a molecular weight of about 3000 to 20,000 and a polymerized ethylene oxide content of at least 50% by weight. The vinyl monomer is preferably a vinyl acetate or low molecular weight alkyl-substituted acrylate. The adhesive is preferably 75-85% copolymer and 15-25% by weight tackifying resin.
