The coexistence of ac and dc subgrids in a hybrid microgrid is likely given that modern distributed sources can either be ac or dc. Linking these subgrids is a power converter, whose topology should preferably be not too unconventional. This is to avoid unnecessary compromises to reliability, simplicity, and industry relevance of the converter. The desired operating features of the hybrid microgrid can then be added through this interlinking converter. To demonstrate, an appropriate control scheme is now developed for controlling the interlinking converter. The objective is to keep the hybrid microgrid in autonomous operation with active power proportionally shared among its distributed sources. Power sharing here should depend only on the source ratings and not their placements within the hybrid microgrid. The proposed scheme can also be extended to include energy storage within the interlinking converter, as already proven in simulation and experiment. These findings have not been previously discussed in the literature, where existing schemes are mostly for an ac or a dc microgrid, but not both in coexistence.

Autonomous Control of Interlinking Converters with Energy Storages in Hybrid AC-DC Microgrids

Recently, multilevel inverters (MLIs) have gained lots of interest in industry and academia, as they are changing into a viable technology for numerous applications, such as renewable power conversion system and drives. For these high power and high/medium voltage applications, MLIs are widely used as one of the advanced power converter topologies. To produce high-quality output without the need for a large number of switches, development of reduced switch MLI (RS MLI) topologies has been a major focus of current research. Therefore, this review paper focuses on a number of recently developed MLIs used in various applications. To assist with advanced current research in this field and in the selection of suitable inverter for various applications, significant understanding on these topologies is clearly summarized based on the three categories, i.e., symmetrical, asymmetrical, and modified topologies. This review paper also includes a comparison based on important performance parameters, detailed technical challenges, current focus, and future development trends. By a suitable combination of switches, the MLI produces a staircase output with low harmonic distortion. For a better understanding of the working principle, a single-phase RS MLI topology is experimentally illustrated for different level generation using both fundamental and high switching frequency techniques which will help the readers to gain the utmost knowledge for advance research.

Recently Developed Reduced Switch Multilevel Inverter for Renewable Energy Integration and Drives Application: Topologies, Comprehensive Analysis and Comparative Evaluation

Multilevel inverters (MLIs) have gained increasing interest for advanced energy-conversion systems due to their features of high-quality produced waveforms, modularity, transformerless operation, voltage, and current scalability, and fault-tolerant operation. However, these merits usually come with the cost of a high number of components. Over the past few years, proposing new MLIs with a lower component count has been one of the most active topics in power electronics. The first aim of this article is to update and summarize the recently developed multilevel topologies with a reduced component count, based on their advantages, disadvantages, construction, and specific applications. Within the framework, both single-phase and three-phase topologies with symmetrical and asymmetrical operations are taken into consideration via a detailed comparison in terms of the used component count and type. The second objective is to propose a comparative method with novel factors to take component ratings into account. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by a comparative study.

Voltage Source Multilevel Inverters With Reduced Device Count: Topological Review and Novel Comparative Factors

This paper proposes a novel single-dc-source multilevel inverter called Packed E-Cell (PEC) topology to achieve nine levels with noticeably reduced components count, while dc capacitors are actively balanced. The nine-level PEC (PEC9) is composed of seven active switches and two dc capacitors that are shunted by a four-quadrant switch to from the E-cell, and it makes use of a single dc link. With the proper design of the corresponding PEC9 switching states, the dc capacitors are balanced using the redundant charging/discharging states. Since the shunted capacitors are horizontally extended, both capacitors are simultaneously charged or discharged with the redundant states, so only the auxiliary dc-link voltage needs to be sensed and regulated to half of the input dc source voltage, and consequently, dc capacitors' voltages are inherently balanced to one quarter of the dc bus voltage. To this end, an active capacitor voltage balancing integrated to the level-shifted half-parabola carrier PWM technique has been designed based on the redundant charging/discharging states to regulate the dc capacitors voltages of PEC9. Furthermore, using the E-cell not only reduces components count but also the proposed topology permits multi ac terminal operation. Thus, five-level inverter operation can be achieved during the four-quadrant switch fault, which confers to the structure high reliability. The theoretical analysis as well as the experimental results are presented and discussed, showing the basic operation, multi-functionality, as well as the superior performance of the proposed novel PEC9 inverter topology.

Packed E-Cell (PEC) converter topology operation and experimental validation

This paper presents a novel step-up dc to ac converter with only one power supply. These types of converters are suitable for renewable and sustainable energy applications with low input dc sources. The proposed topology has the ability of self-voltage balancing and does not apply end side H-bridge to produce a bipolar staircase waveform. Consequently, switching losses and voltage stress of semiconductor components are reduced to a great extent. A small dc voltage source can be used to achieve a high voltage high quality ac waveform through switching the precharged capacitors in series and in parallel. Circuit configuration and its operation principle, capacitors’ charging process, thermal model, capacitances, and losses calculations are discussed in details. Moreover, the comparison of the proposed circuit with the other single source multilevel converters shows that the proposed topology reduces the number of circuit elements. Finally, a laboratory nine-level prototype is built to verify the theoretical analyses and feasibility of the proposed topology. The experimental results show that the converter efficiency at 1 KW output power is 92.75%.

A Novel Step-Up Single Source Multilevel Inverter: Topology, Operating Principle, and Modulation

A novel flying-capacitor-clamped five-level inverter based on bridge modular switched-capacitor topology is proposed in this paper. The inverter features the switched-capacitor circuit with dc–dc boosting conversion ability and the multilevel inverter circuit with flying-capacitor-clamped performance. With the special composite structure, the number of components is cut down compared to the topology of the conventional cascaded multilevel inverter. Meanwhile, part of switches can be operated under line voltage frequency, resulting in switching loss reduction. Hence, the potential of system efficiency and power density is released due to embed switched-capacitor circuit. More importantly, the optimized carrier-based phase disposition pulse width modulation method is employed as a control strategy. Under this control strategy, the capacitor voltage self-balance can be realized and quality of output waveforms can be improved significantly. After simulation, the prototype is built to validate the correctness and practicability of the analysis.

A Flying-Capacitor-Clamped Five-Level Inverter Based on Bridge Modular Switched-Capacitor Topology

Microinverters operating into the single-phase grid from new energy source with low-voltage output face the challenges of efficiency bottleneck and twice-line-frequency variation. This paper proposed a multilevel inverter based on bridge modular switched-capacitor (BMSC) circuits with its superiority in conversion efficiency and power density. The topology is composed of dc–dc and dc–ac stages with independent control for each stage, aiming to improve system stability and simplify the control method. The BMSC dc–dc stage, which can be expanded to synthesize more levels, not only features multilevel voltage gain but also partially replaces the original bulk input capacitor and functions as an active energy buffer to enhance power-decoupling ability between dc and ac sides. In dc–ac stage, the control strategy of optimized unipolar frequency doubling sine-wave pulse width modulation is proposed to improve the quality of output waveform. Meanwhile, the multilevel voltage phase has been optimized to further reduce the power loss. Finally, a prototype has been built and tested. Associated with the simulation, the experimental results validate the practicability of these analyses.

A Bridge Modular Switched-Capacitor-Based Multilevel Inverter With Optimized SPWM Control Method and Enhanced Power-Decoupling Ability

This paper proposes a new bridge modular switched-capacitor-based ac–ac converter, which is intended to replace conventional transformers in commercial and residential applications, especially for microgrids. The main advantages of the proposed converter lie in high efficiency and power factor, bidirectional operation, and capacitor voltage self-balancing ability. Another distinct merit is its symmetric construction, with which the voltage ripple of charge/pump capacitors can be cancelled out, and the output voltage will be smooth with significant ripple reduction. It is also noteworthy that the symmetric construction ensures that the two symmetric parts can work independently under a simplified control strategy. In addition, the modular configuration contributes to convenient voltage extension. Compared with the reported flying-capacitor switched-capacitor ac–ac converter, the proposed converter requires fewer switches and capacitors per unit of voltage conversion, thus suffering lower voltage stress. To demonstrate the performance of the converter, a prototype with 600-W 220-Vrms high-side voltage, 55-Vrms low-side voltage, and a switching frequency of 100 kHz was designed and fabricated. The relevant experimental results are reported herein. The maximum and rated power efficiency obtained were 95.9% and 94.4%, respectively.
