An embodiment of the present invention provides a method of driving a liquid crystal display device including a liquid crystal panel, and a backlight assembly providing light to the liquid crystal panel by a field sequential driving method, the method includes: displaying an image, at the liquid crystal panel and the backlight assembly, by time-dividing two frames into five sub-frames, wherein when images are displayed in the two frames, images of a first frame and a second frame of the two frames share one blue light.

Liquid crystal display device and driving method thereof

Disclosed is a display device capable of compensating unevenness in brightness caused by physical restrictions of a display device or degradation in image quality caused by a partial reduction in contrast occurring in the local dimming technology using human visual characteristics. A liquid crystal panel ( 101 ) modulates illuminating light in accordance with the transmittance, and displays images on a screen. A backlight ( 102 ) emits the illuminating light to the liquid crystal panel ( 101 ) such that amounts of the illuminating light differ for each light emitting area of the screen. A backlight control unit ( 106 ) controls emission brightness of the backlight ( 102 ) for each light emitting area. A local gradation converting unit ( 104 ) performs gradation conversion on an image signal, and acquires a brightness value for each pixel after the conversion. A backlight driving unit ( 107 ) controls the transmittance for each pixel on the basis of the acquired brightness values after the conversion. The local gradation converting unit sets conversion characteristics for pixels to be processed in the image signal such that the brightness values of the pixels to be processed are low as the lightness of the periphery of the pixels to be processed is high, and performs gradation conversion using the set conversion characteristics.

Display device and display method

An LED package includes a LED structure that outputs light in a pattern about an axis and an optical coupling device with a central axis. The coupling device is positioned relative to the LED structure and accepts light from the LED. The coupling device includes a first dielectric interface surface that is substantially cylindrical with respect to the central axis, and a reflecting surface. The first dielectric interface surface accepts a first portion of light from the LED structure and directs it toward the reflecting surface. The reflecting surface accepts the light from the first dielectric interface surface and directs it toward the first dielectric interface surface in a direction substantially perpendicular to the central axis.

Side-emitting optical coupling device

A control unit for a LED assembly includes a first and second LED unit, the LED units being serial connected. The LED assembly, in use, is powered by a switched mode power supply. The control unit being arranged to receive an input signal representing a desired output characteristic of the LED assembly, determine a first and second duty cycle for respective LED units associated with a nominal current of the switched mode power supply, for providing the desired output characteristic, determine the largest of the first and second duty cycles for respective LED units, determine a reduced current based on at least the largest of the duty cycles, adjust the first and second duty cycle for respective LED units based on the reduced current, and provide an output signal for the LED assembly and the switched mode power supply based on the adjusted first and second duty cycles and the reduced current for obtaining the desired characteristic.

Control unit for a LED assembly and lighting system

A radiation distribution system designed to produce a batwing distribution. The system may be used with radiative sources emitting in the visible spectrum or in other spectra. The system comprises a specially shaped lens disposed over a radiative source, such as an LED, for example. The lens and source are arranged between two reflector bodies, both of which have an elongated reflective surface that faces the source. The reflector bodies each have two different reflective surfaces that face outward and away from each other. The lens and both reflective surfaces work in concert to redirect a portion of the emitted radiation to create the desired batwing distribution. Several sources may be arranged linearly between a single pair of reflector bodies on a common surface to create a linear array of sources. Likewise, multiple linear arrays may be combined to form a two-dimensional array. In the two-dimensional configuration, linear arrays of sources are disposed on both sides of a reflector body, so that both of the reflective surfaces are utilized.

Optical system for batwing distribution

A method of increasing the dynamic range of an image comprising a plurality of pixels each having a luminance value within a first luminance dynamic range. The method includes determining a background luminance value for each pixel of the image and determining a minimum and a maximum of the background luminance values. A conversion factor is then determined for each pixel of the image based on the minimum and maximum of the background luminance values. The image id converted from the first luminance dynamic range to a second luminance dynamic range by multiplying the luminance value of each pixel of the image by its conversion factor.

Method of displaying a low dynamic range image in a high dynamic range

Methods and devices (400, 500) for capturing at least one digital Image (550) are described. In one implementation, transmission of input light is modulated (410) onto the same pixel elements of a digital image sensor (420), comprising pixel elements. Frames of an image are captured having different exposures (440A, 440B, 440C) from the modulated transmission of the input light using the digital image sensor (420). The different exposure frames of the Image are processed to produce a high dynamic range digital Image (450). In another implementation, a portion of the input light is transmitted onto the same pixel elements of respective digital image sensors (530, 532) to produce frames (560A. 560B) of an image (550) having different exposures The different exposure frames {560 A, 560B) of the image are processed (540) to produce a high dynamic range digital image (570).

High dynamic range image recorder

A 32 inch high contrast LCD TV using LED backlight is demonstrated. The LCD TV dynamically manipulates the brightnessr of individual LEDs to largely enhance the display contrast and reduce the power consumption. Preliminary results indicate the contrast can be up to 125,000:1, with maximum luminance of 500 cd/m2. Compared with the static LED backlight, up to 70% of the power can be saved depending on the average picture level (APL) of the image.

Backlit Display and Backlight System Thereof

A light guiding strip and a backlight module and display using the same are provided. The light guiding strip of the present invention includes a plurality of light reflecting surfaces and a plurality of light emergent surfaces. Each of the light reflecting surfaces has a light diffusion pattern. The light guiding strip of the present invention has the advantages of light weight, wide LED pitch, low cost, thickness and so on.
