A technique for producing geometrically accurate magnetic resonance images (MRIs) with undistorted intensity in the face of high levels of static field inhomogeneity arising from either source is presented. The technique requires the acquisition of two images of the same object with altered gradients. On the basis of a knowledge of these gradients it employs an automatic postprocessing step that exploits some invariant characteristics of the distortions to produce a rectified image from the two acquired images. No phantom imaging is involved and no operator interaction is required. The technique is theoretically justified and compared to other techniques, and experimental results that show that the technique works are presented. The improved accuracy in geometry and intensity may improve reliability of stereotactic surgery, may enhance the feasibility of both clinical and industrial imaging via external fields, and may increase the resolution of microscopic imaging. >

A technique for accurate magnetic resonance imaging in the presence of field inhomogeneities

When time-varying gradients are used for imaging, the off-resonance behavior does not just cause geometric distortion as is the case with spin-warp imaging, but changes the shape of the impulse response and causes blurring. This effect is well known for projection reconstruction and spiral k-space scanning sequences. The authors introduce a reconstruction and homogeneity correction method to correct for the zeroth order effects of inhomogeneity using prior knowledge of the inhomogeneity. In this method, the data are segmented according to collection time, reconstructed using some fast, linear algorithm, correlated for inhomogeneity, and then superimposed to yield a homogeneity corrected image. This segmented method is compared to a conjugate phase reconstruction in terms of degree of correction and execution time. The authors apply this method to in vivo images using projection-reconstruction and spiral-scan sequences. >

A homogeneity correction method for magnetic resonance imaging with time-varying gradients

The authors present a new in vivo method to correct the nonlinear, object-shape-dependent and material-dependent spatial distortion in magnetic resonance (MR) images caused by magnetic susceptibility variations. This distortion across the air/tissue interface before and after the correction is quantified using a phantom. The results are compared to the distortion-free computed tomography (CT) images of the same phantom by fusing CT and MR images using fiducials, with a registration accuracy of better than a millimeter. The distortion at the bone/tissue boundary is negligible compared to the typical MRI (MR imaging) resolution of 1 mm, while that at the air/tissue boundary creates displacements of about 2 mm (for G/sub x/ 3.13 mT/m). This is a significant value if MRI is to provide highly accurate geometric measurements, as in the case of target localization for stereotaxic surgery. The correction scheme provides MR images with accuracy similar to that of CT: 1 mm. A new method to estimate the magnetic susceptibility of materials from MR images is presented. The magnetic susceptibility of cortical bone is measured using a SQUID magnetometer, and is found to be -8.86 ppm (with respect to air), which is quite similar to that of tissue (-9 ppm). >

MR susceptibility misregistration correction

Because magnetic resonance imaging–guided radiation therapy (MRIgRT) offers exquisite soft tissue contrast and the ability to image tissues in arbitrary planes, the interest in this technology has increased dramatically in recent years. However, intrinsic geometric distortion stemming from both the system hardware and the magnetic properties of the patient affects MR images and compromises the spatial integrity of MRI-based radiation treatment planning, given that for real-time MRIgRT, precision within 2 mm is desired. In this article, we discuss the causes of geometric distortion, describe some well-known distortion correction algorithms, and review geometric distortion measurements from 12 studies, while taking into account relevant imaging parameters. Eleven of the studies reported phantom measurements quantifying system-dependent geometric distortion, while 2 studies reported simulation data quantifying magnetic susceptibility–induced geometric distortion. Of the 11 studies investigating system-dependent geometric distortion, 5 reported maximum measurements less than 2 mm. The simulation studies demonstrated that magnetic susceptibility–induced distortion is typically smaller than system-dependent distortion but still nonnegligible, with maximum distortion ranging from 2.1 to 2.6 mm at a field strength of 1.5 T. As expected, anatomic landmarks containing interfaces between air and soft tissue had the largest distortions. The evidence indicates that geometric distortion reduces the spatial integrity of MRI-based radiation treatment planning and likely diminishes the efficacy of MRIgRT. Better phantom measurement techniques and more effective distortion correction algorithms are needed to achieve the desired spatial precision.

Spatial Precision in Magnetic Resonance Imaging-Guided Radiation Therapy: The Role of Geometric Distortion

A method for correcting image distortion arising from magnetic field gradient nonuniformity in accordance with which the gradient nonuniformity is modeled, the expected distortion in the image calculated, and a geometric correction applied to the distorted image. In the preferred embodiment, polynomial interpolation is used to implement the geometric correction.

Method for correcting image distortion due to gradient nonuniformity

A novel technique is presented for reconstructing accurate NMR images from projections under inhomogeneous main magnetic field. The mathematical basis and the point-spread functions of such a curvilinear reconstruction for two- and three-dimensional imagings are fully described. The proper use and the effectiveness of this technique are demonstrated by computer simulations. The promising results presented could strongly influence practices in the design, manufacture and use of the main magnet for NMR imaging by the projections method.
