A power distribution system (that can detect an unsafe fault condition where an individual or object has come in contact with the power conductors) regulates the transfer of energy from a source to a load. Periodically, the source controller opens an S 1 disconnect switch, a and load controller opens an S 2 disconnect switch. A capacitor represents the capacitance across the load terminals. If the capacitor discharges at a rate higher or lower than predetermined values after the S 1 and S 2 disconnect switches are opened, then a fault condition is registered, and the S 1 and S 2 switches will not be commanded to return to a closed position, thus isolating the fault from both the source and the load.

The calculation includes determining a calculated reactance or impedance to the fault, and uses the line parameters to determine locations on the system that match the calculated reactance to the fault. The calculation may further include a determination of faulted phase and eliminate fault location possibilities based on absence of the faulted phase at those locations. The calculation may further use data reported from line monitors such as faulted circuit indicators (FCIs).

A system for controlling a multi-feed power distribution network is described herein. The network includes a first network sector that includes a first plurality of devices connected to a first power source and a second network sector that includes a second plurality of devices connected to a second power source. The system includes a first controller and a second controller. The first controller is configured to control operation of the first network sector and exchange data with the second controller. The second controller is configured to control operation of the second network sector and exchange data with the first controller. The system is modular and it can be expanded to include additional controllers as necessary. The present invention relates to a method of generating fault indication in a feeder remote terminal unit for a power distribution automation system. The method is performed in a distribution system that includes a plurality of feeder remote terminal units, which are installed in respective sections of a line and are configured to measure voltage, current and a phase difference of the line, and a central control unit for determining whether a fault occurs and controlling operation of the feeder remote terminal units. In the method, phases are measured by each of the feeder remote terminal units. The phase of a zero-sequence current is compared with that of a zero-sequence voltage. A direction of a fault current is calculated, and fault indication information is generated in the calculated direction of the fault current.

CONSTITUTION: An auxiliary voltage transformer(100) receives and converts a three-phase voltage from a main voltage transformer and transmits the converted voltage signal to the data collection portion(200). An auxiliary current transformer(120) receives and converts three-phase current from a main current transformer and transmits the converted current signal to the data collection portion(200). A signal handling portion(220) of the data collection portion(200) handles the voltage and current signals and transmits them to a low pass filter(240) of the data collection portion(200). The low pass filter(240) removes a radio frequency from the received signals. An A/D converter(260) of the data collection portion(200) converts the voltage and the current signals to digital signals. A data storage portion(280) stores the current and the voltage signals received from the A/D converter(260). A main control portion(300) checks a trouble of a transmission line by using digital voltage and current data. An input/output portion(400) receives trouble information and transmits it to the main control portion(300). A memory portion(600) stores trouble information data and trouble distance data. A correction/display portion(500) corrects trouble information and displays the trouble information data and the trouble distance data.

A method for displaying a failure of a terminal unit in a power distribution automation system is provided to display the failure of the terminal unit in satisfaction of a predetermined condition by comparing a phase of normal current with a phase of normal voltage when a direction of measured current is from a power terminal to a load terminal. A method for displaying a failure of a terminal unit in a power distribution automation system includes the steps of: measuring a phase of zero voltage and a phase of zero current in the terminal unit; comparing the phase of the zero current with the phase of the zero voltage measured in the previous step; and displaying the failure of the terminal unit by calculating a direction of fault current. The power distribution automation system includes a plurality of terminal units installed on a line to measure voltage, current, and a phase difference of the line.
