TL;DR: This article examined the role of both formal organizational structure and individual characteristics in shaping advice and information providing and receiving about instruction in elementary school and found that individual characteristics of race and gender are significantly associated with the formation of a tie.

The Alignment of the Informal and Formal Organizational Supports for Reform: Implications for Improving Teaching in Schools

TL;DR: In this article, the authors combine social network analysis with interview data to analyze how well the formal and informal aspects of a school's social context are aligned, and find that when the formal organization of the school and patterns of informal interaction are aligned the faculty and leaders in a school are better able to coordinate instructional change.

How External Institutions Penetrate Schools Through Formal and Informal Leaders

TL;DR: In this article, the role of formal and informal leaders in the diffusion of external reforms into schools and teachers' practices is investigated, where formal leaders are designated by their roles in the formal organization of the school (e.g., principals, department chairs, and instructional coaches) and informal leader refer to those who do not have any formal leadership roles but are nominated by other colleagues as influences on their instructional practices.
