TL;DR: In this article, a feature hierarchy for body-in-white (BIW) design is proposed, comprising a principal surface to which surface, edge and transition features are added.
Abstract: This paper is concerned with the computer-aided design (CAD) representation of the pressed steel structure and outer panels of a car body-the so-called body-inwhite (BIW). In particular, it is concerned with the development of a representation that allows derivation from a single central design model of the differing viewpoints of the various engineering specialists who are involved in the design and development of the BIW. A feature-based description is used as the fundamental representation and feature models and geometric representations appropriate to different applications are derived from the feature model by adding, modifying or removing detail from the model. A feature hierarchy for BIW design is proposed, comprising a principal surface to which surface, edge and transition features are added. Viewpoint-dependent models are derived by a formal mapping approach that leads to secondary feature-models appropriate to each specialism, and which may be further mapped onto geometric representations. The ...
