New settlement was an important feature of Ptolemaic rule in Egypt. Archaeology can frequently no longer help in understanding the initial processes and structure of new settlement. A few ancient textual references have survived which shed light on such processes. Two culturally very distinct texts -the early Ptolemaic Pithom stela and a section in Strabo's Geography of the early Roman period -describe the foundation of Arsinoe (near modem Suez) and of Ptolemais Theron somewhere along the Ethiopian Red Sea coast. This article discusses the Greek and Egyptian literary treatment of new Ptolemaic settlement. The two texts are set back into their respective cultural contexts and compared with each other as to which factors, genre and topoi shaped the perception of new settlement.
