Due to its environmental benefits and the minimal noise emissions the electric drive becomes increasingly important particularly in inner city areas. The significant disadvantage on electric driving is the storing problem of the electrical energy. Electrical power supply on the route gives an elegant opportunity to solve this problem. Based on inductive power transmission a more advanced solution is represented by a wireless underground energy supply. Due to this concept a smaller and less costly onboard electricity storage unit is required. If the infrastructure exists it is obvious to use it also for other lighter vehicle categories as passenger cars and delivery trucks. Within this publication the research methodology, the vehicle technology as well as a concept for the charging infrastructure in the city center of Vienna will be presented.

Wireless underground power supply for trolley buses and transferability to other vehicle categories

Electric drive becomes due to its environmental benefits increasingly important. But there are some disadvantages on electrical driving. The significant one is the storing problem of the electrical energy. For public transport systems in cities, it is possible to solve that problem with an electrical power supply on the route. The common way is overhead lines. A more advanced solution is offered by a wireless underground energy supply based on inductive power transmission. Additionally the bus system requires only small on-board electricity storage. To ensure reliable track holding and energy transfer an intelligent control device for automatic guidance is required. With that device a direct connection between vehicle and infrastructure is given. The design already works in a prototype vehicle. The development methodology, the vehicle technology and first results will be presented in the publication.

New Electric Bus System with Wireless Underground Power Supply and Automatic Guidance

Time Sensitive Network (TSN) standards are gaining traction in the scientific community and automotive Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) due their promise of deterministic Ethernet networking. Among these standards, Generalized Precision Time Protocol (gPTP) - IEEE 802.1AS - allows network devices to be synchronized with a precision far higher than other synchronization standards, such as Network Time Protocol (NTP). gPTP is a profile of Precision Time Protocol (PTP) which, due to its robustness to delay variations, has been designated for automotive applications. Nonetheless, gPTP was designed without security controls, which makes it vulnerable to a number of attacks. This work reveals a critical vulnerability caused by a common implementation practice that opens the door to spoofing attacks on gPTP. To assess the impact of this vulnerability, we built two real gPTP-capable testbeds. Our results show high risks of this vulnerability destabilizing the system functionality.
