The 'Architecture' of language according to systemic functional theory : developments since the 1970s

Integrated application localization techniques are described in which support for application localization is provided as an integrated component of a development environment. Localizations for selected languages/locales integrate with application builds in the development environment so that updates are synchronized with project resources for multiple languages. This involves creating and employing localization files corresponding to source content of a project using a designated file format suitable to enable translations. Localization files that are created in the designated format may be exposed in various ways for translation via the system, a developer, a translation service, or other selected translation sources. A single multilingual resource file for an application is then generated to contain resources in multiple languages based on translations made available through the translation sources.

Integrated application localization

This article is concerned with how meaning potential, in particular an individual's personalized meaning potential, emerges from acts of meaning. This happens during different time frames: logogenetic—the creation of meaning in text; ontogenetic—the learning of a personalized meaning potential; and phylogenetic—the evolution of the collective meaning potential. Logogenetically, a person learns through text in interaction with others, distilling meaning potential from the instantial acts of meaning and constantly revising their own personalized meaning potential, both qualitatively and quantitatively. This learning involves both learning language and learning "content" through language, locally within a single text or cumulatively over many texts. I will model both these aspects of learning and show how they vary registerially according to the contexts in which texts unfold.

Meaning in the Making: Meaning Potential Emerging From Acts of Meaning

This article reports on our experience with developing multilingual grammar resources for natural language generation (NLG). We employ a strong notion of multilinguality: (i) Grammars for different languages share their overall organization, as well as those descriptions that reflect similarities between languages and (ii) a single realization engine is used to generate with these grammars. This strong notion arises from the functionalist approach we adopt: we hypothesize that languages are likely to share communicative functions, despite possibly differing in how these functions are realized. We discuss the advantages of this view in the development of large-coverage generation grammars for a broad variety of languages.

Multilingual Resource Sharing Across Both Related and Unrelated Languages: An Implemented, Open-Source Framework for Practical Natural Language Generation

In this paper we present an implemented account of multilingual linguistic resources for multilingual text generation that improves significantly on the degree of reuse of resources both across languages and across applications. We argue that this is a necessary step for multilingual generation in order to reduce the high cost of constructing linguistic resources and to make natural language generation relevant for a wider range of applications particularly, in this paper, for multilingual software and user interfaces. We begin by contrasting a weak and a strong approach to multilinguality in the state of the art in multilingual text generation. Neither approach has provided sufficient principles for organizing multilingual work. We then introduce our framework , where multilingual variation is included as an intrinsic feature of all levels of representation.
