Journal ArticleDOI
The phosphoenolpyruvate:sugar phosphotransferase system of oral streptococci and its role in the control of sugar metabolism
TL;DR: Results are accumulating suggesting that a protein called IIABMan, as well as the phosphocarrier protein HPr, are key regulatory components that allow these bacteria to select rapidly metabolizable sugars, such as glucose or fructose, over less readily utilizable carbohydrates.
Journal ArticleDOI
Transport and phosphorylation of xylitol by a fructose phosphotransferase system in Streptococcus mutans.
TL;DR: It was concluded that xylitol was transported and phosphorylated by a constitutive phosphoenolpyruvate:fructose phosphotransferase system in S. mutans, and the data suggested thatxylitol toxicity in the growth of Streptococcus mutans is caused by the intracellular accumulation of Xylitol phosphate.
Journal ArticleDOI
Enzyme I and HPr from Lactobacillus casei: their role in sugar transport, carbon catabolite repression and inducer exclusion.
Rosa Viana,Vicente Monedero,Vicente Monedero,Valérie Dossonnet,Christian Vadeboncoeur,Gaspar Pérez-Martínez,Josef Deutscher +6 more
TL;DR: The Lactobacillus casei ptsH and ptsI genes, which encode enzyme I and HPr, respectively, the general components of the phosphoenolpyruvate–carbohydrate phosphotransferase system (PTS), are cloned and sequenced and Northern blot analysis revealed that these two genes are organized in a single‐transcriptional unit whose expression is partially induced.
Journal ArticleDOI
Galactose and lactose genes from the galactose-positive bacterium Streptococcus salivarius and the phylogenetically related galactose-negative bacterium Streptococcus thermophilus: organization, sequence, transcription, and activity of the gal gene products.
Katy Vaillancourt,Sylvain Moineau,Michel Frenette,Christian B. Lessard,Christian Vadeboncoeur +4 more
TL;DR: The results clearly indicated that the gal-lac gene cluster was efficiently transcribed in both species, whereas the ribosome binding site of S. thermophilus galK differed from that ofS.
Journal ArticleDOI
Fat-free yogurt made using a galactose-positive exopolysaccharide-producing recombinant strain of Streptococcus thermophilus
Gilles Robitaille,A. Tremblay,Sylvain Moineau,Daniel St-Gelais,Christian Vadeboncoeur,Michel Britten +5 more
TL;DR: It is possible to increase the production of EPS by ropy S. thermophilus strains through genetic engineering of galactose metabolism, but when used in combination with Lb.
