Universal Routing Strategies for Interconnection Networks

Active networks allow protocol processing code to be loaded dynamically into network nodes at run-time. This code can perform tasks specific to a stream of packets or even a single packet. In this paper we compare two active network architectures: the active node transfer system (ANTS) and the messenger system (M0). We have implemented a robust audio multicast protocol and a layered video multicast protocol with both active network systems. We discuss the differences of the two systems, evaluate architectural strengths and weaknesses, compare the runtime performance, and report practical experience and lessons learned.

Multicasting multimedia streams with active networks

The augmentation in the field of communication technology has lead to an extensive use of multimedia applications. Multimedia applications, especially, over wireless networks, can easily be intercepted, thus, making its security an essential and challenging issue. Multimedia encryption is the core enabling technology that provides confidentiality and prevents unauthorized access of the content. Real time constraints, large amount, and unique characteristics of multimedia data inhibits the use of traditional cryptographic algorithms over multimedia data. Recent years have witnessed an astounding development in the direction of format compliant, perceptual, and scalable encryption techniques that support advanced functionalities. This chapter gives a snapshot of the conventional encryption, and an up-to-date treatise of the principles, techniques, attacks, and advancements of multimedia encryption techniques developed to meet desired goals in specific applications.

Multimedia Encryption: A Brief Overview

Automated processes in distributed communication environments require tools for unifying heterogeneous multimedia services. The Teleservice Descriptor is introduced for generic handling and integration of traditional and innovative forms of communication. The Intelligent Resource Selector applies this descriptor for dynamic selection of communication end points and combination of necessary converters for service interworking. The Intelligent Personal Communication Support System provides the test-bed for the implementation of the developed algorithms, applicable in CPE, TINA and IN solutions.
