The new level of precision and global coverage provided by satellite altimetry is rapidly advancing studies of ocean circulation. It allows for new insights into marine geodesy, ice sheet movements, plate tectonics, and for the first time provides high-resolution bathymetry for previously unmapped regions of our watery planet and crucial information on the large-scale ocean features on intra-season to interannual time scales. Satellite Altimetry and Earth Sciences has integrated the expertise of the leading international researchers to demonstrate the techniques, missions, and accuracy of satellite altimetry, including altimeter measurements, orbit determination, and ocean circulation models. Satellite altimetry is helping to advance studies of ocean circulation, tides, sea level, surface waves and allowing new insights into marine geodesy. Satellite altimetry and Earth sciences :a handbook of techniques and applications

Under assumptions common in radar altimetry, the mean backscattered return power for a short-pulse radar and near-normal-incidence scattering from a rough ocean surface is given by the convolution of several terms. For a nearly Gaussian transmitted pulse shape scattered from a nearly Gaussian distributed sea surface, a small-argument series expansion of one of the terms within the convolution leads to a several-term power series expansion for the mean return waveform. Specific expressions are given for the first four terms. These results, which require much less computer time than would the otherwise necessary numerical convolution, are useful for data analysis from current or past radar altimeters and for design studies of future systems. Several representative results are presented for an idealized SEASAT radar altimeter.

Radar altimeter mean return wave forms from near-normal-incidence ocean surface scattering

Sea state information is needed for many applications, ranging from safety at sea and on the coast, for which real time data are essential, to planning and design needs for infrastructure that require long time series. The definition of the wave climate and its possible evolution requires high resolution data, and knowledge on possible drift in the observing system. Sea state is also an important climate variable that enters in air-sea fluxes parameterizations. Finally, sea state patterns can reveal the intensity of storms and associated climate patterns at large scales, and the intensity of currents at small scales. A synthesis of user requirements leads to requests for spatial resolution at kilometer scales, and estimations of trends of a few centimeters per decade. Such requirements cannot be met by observations alone in the foreseeable future, and numerical wave models can be combined with in situ and remote sensing data to achieve the required resolution. As today's models are far from perfect, observations are critical in providing forcing data, namely winds, currents and ice, and validation data, in particular for frequency and direction information, and extreme wave heights. In situ and satellite observations are particularly critical for the correction and calibration of significant wave heights to ensure the stability of model time series. A number of developments are underway for extending the capabilities of satellites and in situ observing systems. These include the generalization of directional measurements, an easier exchange of moored buoy data, the measurement of waves on drifting buoys, the evolution of satellite altimeter technology, and the measurement of directional wave spectra from satellite radar instruments. For each of these observing systems, the stability of the data is a very important issue. The combination of the different data sources, including numerical models, can help better fulfill the needs of users.

Observing Sea States

Satellite radar altimetry provides a unique sea level data set that extends over more than 25 years back in time and that has an almost global coverage. However, when approaching the coasts, the extraction of correct sea level estimates is challenging due to corrupted waveforms and to errors in most of the corrections and in some auxiliary information used in the data processing. The development of methods dedicated to the improvement of altimeter data in the coastal zone dates back to the 1990s, but the major progress happened during the last decade thanks to progress in radar technology [e.g., synthetic aperture radar (SAR) mode and Ka-band frequency], improved waveform retracking algorithms, the availability of new/improved corrections (e.g., wet troposphere and tidal models) and processing workflows oriented to the coastal zone. Today, a set of techniques exists for the processing of coastal altimetry data, generally called “coastal altimetry.” They have been used to generate coastal altimetry products. Altimetry is now recognized as part of the integrated observing system devoted to coastal sea level monitoring. In this article, we review the recent technical advances in processing and the new technological capabilities of satellite radar altimetry in the coastal zone. We also illustrate the fast-growing use of coastal altimetry data sets in coastal sea level research and applications, as high-frequency (tides and storm surge) and long-term sea level change studies.

Satellite Altimetry Measurements of Sea Level in the Coastal Zone

Coastal zones are highly dynamical systems affected by a variety of natural and anthropogenic forcing factors that include sea level rise, extreme events, local oceanic and atmospheric processes, ground subsidence, etc. However, so far, they remain poorly monitored on a global scale. To better understand changes affecting world coastal zones and to provide crucial information to decision-makers involved in adaptation to and mitigation of environmental risks, coastal observations of various types need to be collected and analyzed. In this white paper, we first discuss the main forcing agents acting on coastal regions (e.g., sea level, winds, waves and currents, river runoff, sediment supply and transport, vertical land motions, land use) and the induced coastal response (e.g., shoreline position, estuaries morphology, land topography at the land-sea interface and coastal bathymetry). We identify a number of space-based observational needs that have to be addressed in the near future to understand coastal zone evolution. Among these, improved monitoring of coastal sea level by satellite altimetry techniques is recognized as high priority. Classical altimeter data in the coastal zone are adversely affected by land contamination with degraded range and geophysical corrections. However, recent progress in coastal altimetry data processing and multisensor data synergy, offers new perspective to measure sea level change very close to the coast. This issue is discussed in much detail in this paper, including the development of a global coastal sea-level and sea state climate record with mission consistent coastal processing and products dedicated to coastal regimes. Finally, we present a new promising technology based on the use of Signals of Opportunity (SoOp), i.e., communication satellite transmissions that are reutilized as illumination sources in a bistatic radar configuration, for measuring coastal sea level. Since SoOp technology requires only receiver technology to be placed in orbit, small satellite platforms could be used, enabling a constellation to achieve high spatio-temporal resolutions of sea level in coastal zones.

Coastal SAR and PLRM altimetry in German Bight and West Baltic Sea

Corrigendum to "Coastal SAR and PLRM altimetry in German Bight and West Baltic Sea" [Adv. Space Res. 62 (2018) 1371-1404]

The service SAR-RDSAR has been primarily developed as an offline processor prototype under the working title “PLRM FBR processor for CryoSat-2 at TU Darmstadt”. The PLRM products were intended to serve as a reference solution to validate the SARvatore G-POD service in SAR mode and to support teaching at TU Darmstadt. Recently this processor prototype has been enhanced to compute RDSAR data in the coastal zone and SAR L1B and L2 data co-located to RDSAR. Various processing options have been implemented.

Conditional Sea Surface Statistics and Their Impact on Geophysical Sea Surface Parameters Retrieved from SAR Altimetry Signals

In this paper, we characterize the sea-ice elevation distribution by using NASA’s Operation IceBridge (OIB) Airborne Topographic Mapper (ATM) L1B data over the Arctic Ocean during 94 Spring campaigns between 2009 and 2019. The ultimate objective of this analysis is to better understand sea-ice topography to improve the estimation of the sea-ice freeboard for nadir-looking altimeters. We first introduce the use of an exponentially modified Gaussian (EMG) distribution to fit the surface elevation probability density function (PDF). The characteristic function of the EMG distribution can be integrated in the modeling of radar altimeter waveforms. Our results indicate that the Arctic sea-ice elevation PDF is dominantly positively skewed and the EMG distribution is better suited to fit the PDFs than the classical Gaussian or lognormal PDFs. We characterize the elevation correlation characteristics by computing the autocorrelation function (ACF) and correlation length (CL) of the ATM measurements. To support the radar altimeter waveform retracking over sea ice, we perform this study typically on 1.5 km ATM along-track segments that reflect the footprint diameter size of radar altimeters. During the studied period, the mean CL values range from 20 to 30 m, which is about 2% of the radar altimeter footprint diameter (1.5 km).
