A CMOS integrated signal processing system for a sampling receiver includes a timing recovery circuit, wherein an on-chip numerically controlled oscillator is operative at periods T that are initially equal to the nominal baud rate of the signals controls a sinc interpolator receiving samples at the sampling rate. A loop filter is coupled to the sinc interpolator and to the numerically controlled oscillator. The arrangement is capable of handling various symbol rates. The system includes a circuit for carrier recovery, having a second on-chip numerically controlled oscillator, a digital derotation circuit responsive to the second numerically controlled oscillator, accepting an in phase component and a quadrature component of the sampled signals. An adaptive phase error estimation circuit is coupled in a feedback loop.

Signal processing system

A method in which correctable I/Q imbalance errors in a complex receiver can be detected and compensated for digitally without the use of special calibration signals. Differential D.C. offset errors are compensated by averaging the incoming I d and Q d digital signals and subtracting from them an expected value of differential D.C. offset, for example, computed from the long term average of the I and Q signals to create I' and Q' signals. Differential gain imbalance errors are corrected by calculating a root means square average of the I' and Q' digital signals and applies to them compensation coefficients K x and K y determined from either the RMS average or from a Stochastic Gradient Algorithm. The DSP compensates for the quadrature phase errors by calculating a compensation matrix which is independent of the frequency of the carrier and applies the compensation matrix to the I' and Q' digital signals. The compensation matrix for quadrature phase errors is completely independent of the frequency of the input carrier signal supplied to the complex receiver, and is not dependent on the use of a calibration signal. The compensation may be performed as a step in calibration of the complex receiver, or continuously.

Compensation method for I/Q channel imbalance errors

A digital broadcast transmitting/receiving system and a signal processing method thereof that can improve the receiving performance of the system. A digital broadcast transmitter has a randomizer to randomize an input data stream which has null bytes being inserted at a specified position, a multiplexer to output a data stream formed by inserting specified known data into the position of the null bytes of the randomized data stream, an encoder to encode the data stream outputted from the multiplexer, and a modulator/RF-converter to modulate the encoded data, RF-convert the modulated data and transmit the RF-converted data. The receiving performance of the digital broadcast transmitting/receiving system can be improved even in a multi-path channel by detecting the known data from the received signal and using the known data in synchronization and equalization in a digital broadcast receiver.

Digital broadcast transmitting/receiving system having an improved receiving performance and signal processing method thereof

In order to correct nonlinearities of an amplifier (20) which receives a radio signal (d') and produces an amplified radio signal representing an input complex digital signal (m), a predistortion table, associating a value of a predistorted complex digital signal with each value of the input complex digital signal, is stored, and the predistorted complex signal (d) is modulated in order to obtain the radio signal addressed to the amplifier. In an adaptation period, a fraction (r') of the amplified radio signal is demodulated in order to obtain a demodulated complex signal (r) which is compared with the input complex signal, with which the predistorted complex signal modulated in said adaptation period is associated, in order to update the predistortion table. The predistortion table is updated on the basis of mean values calculated from blocks of samples of the input complex signal and of the demodulated complex signal, which are stored in the adaptation period.

Method of correcting nonlinearities of an amplifier, and radio transmitter employing a method of this type

Signals, systems and methods for transmitting and receiving layered modulation for digital signals are presented. A layered signal for transmitting data, comprises a first signal layer including a first carrier and first signal symbols for a first digital signal transmission and a second signal layer including a second carrier and second signal symbols for a second signal, transmission disposed on the first signal layer, wherein the layered signal has the first carrier demodulated and first layer decoded to produce the first signal symbols for a first layer transport, the first signal symbols are remodulated and subtracted from the layered signal to produce the second signal layer, and the second signal layer has the second carrier demodulated and decoded to produce the second signal symbols for a second layer transport.

Layered modulation for digital signals

Distortion introduced in phase modulated RF signals by amplifiers and other signal processors is substantially reduced by modifying complex modulating signals I,Q in a way that compensates for the amplifier phase error φ e as a function of amplifier power P. In a preferred embodiment, I, Q are combined to calculate the amplifier power level and scaled by a parameter, e.g., K1=-dφ e /dP, to provide factor B so that compensated signals I"=AQ+BI and Q"=AI-BQ, where A is a constant, can be determined. When an RF carrier modulated by I", Q" is passed through the distorting amplifier the amplifier induced distortion is cancelled. Substantial reduction in bit error probability is obtained. The method can also be used for post-distortion correction.
