Data is secured in a computer network to transparently establish and manage a separation of user-based communities of interest based upon crypto-graphically separated, need to know, security levels. Data from a source document, data object or data stream is filtered to form subsets of extracted data and remainder data based upon security levels for the communities. Extracts are stored in assigned memories. Full or partial plaintext reconstruction is permitted only in the presence of assigned security clearance for the community of the inquiring party. Encryption, corresponding to security levels, establishes separation of secured data. The information processing system uses a data filter to extract security sensitive words, data objects, etc., a distributed storage system and a compiler is used to reconstruct plaintext based on security clearance. Multiple level encryption in one document is also available.

Data security system and method for separation of user communities

The method, program and system secures sensitive data/objects found in a data source document with an editor. The simple editor identifies and displays, in situ, the sensitive words/objects per each security level. Level tags are inserted and adjunctive words/objects are marked/displayed per the level's protocol. The precursor document is processed to extract sensitive and adjunctive words/objects. The stripped data is either separately stored or partial versions of the secured document are stored per protocol. A comprehensive editor secures content data and meta data contained in a data document object model (DOM). The editor maps the source document root, branch and leaf components as binary files populated with content data and meta data. Security introns, earlier identified based upon the level's informational attributes, are excluded. Security exons are copied from the source content and meta data binary files into a security safe document (template). Filtration, extraction, dispersal and storage follow.

Data security system and method with editor

The method for securing data includes establishing a group of security sensitive items, filtering data and extracting and separating the security items from remainder data. The filtered data are separately stored (locally on a PC or on another computer in a LAN or WAN or on the Internet.) A map may be generated. The filter and/or map may be destroyed or stored. The data input, extracted data and remainder data may be deleted from the originating computer. Encryption may be utilized to enhance security (including transfers of data, filter and map). Reconstruction of the data is permitted only in the presence of a predetermined security clearance. A plurality of security clearances may be used to enable a corresponding plurality of partial, reconstructed views of the plaintext (omitting higher security words). A computer readable medium containing programming instructions and an information processing system is encompassed.

Data security system and method

An adaptive method, system and program for securing data against a plurality of electronic and environmental events directed at computers utilizes a hacking monitor which generates attack warnings (such as a hacking warning) dependent upon the severity of the attack. Based upon these warnings, data is filtered to extract security sensitive words etc. and the extract and remainder data (if necessary) is stored in assigned memory. Full or partial reconstruction is permitted, manually or automatically, with a security clearance. Encryption is typically used dependent upon the warning. The information processing system includes a filter which is adjusted based upon the degree of attack warning to extract security sensitive words. A storage system stores extracted data and remainder data (if necessary) based upon the level of the warning and a compiler is used to reconstruct the data in the presence of the appropriate security clearance level.

Data security system and method responsive to electronic attacks

Distributed computer system processes data having select content (SC) represented by one or more predetermined words, characters, etc. The system has a plurality of SC data stores in a server cloud for respective security designated (Sec-D) data and scarcity designated (S-D) data, each with respective access controls thereat. The SC data stores are is operatively coupled on a network. An identification module for identifying SC data stores for the Sec-D data and S-D data in the server cloud. A processor activates an SC data stores in the server cloud thereby permitting access to the SC data stores and respective Sec-D data and S-D data based upon an application of one or more of said access controls thereat. The processor has a reconstruction module operating as a data process employing the respective access controls to combine one or more of the Sec-D data and S-D data.

Digital information infrastructure and method

A subset of markup elements used in an electronically published document can be defined as being "significant." For example, all titled elements may be called significant elements. The structure of the document defined by only the significant elements can be determined in the same manner as the structure of the document defined by all markup elements. For example, titled elements define a table of contents. A first representation of the document structure defined by all of the markup elements may be used in combination with a second representation of the document structure defined by only the significant elements to control selection of portions of the document such that previous and subsequent portions can be selected and rendered in a consistent and intuitive manner. In particular, given a selected leaf element in the second representation, elements adjacent to the selected leaf element may be selected and rendered according to a relationship of these elements, as defined in the first representation, to both the selected leaf element and to other significant elements in the second representation.

Generation of chunks of a long document for an electronic book system

Bibliographic metadata standards are a longstanding mechanism for Digital Libraries to manage records and express relationships between them. As digital scholarship, particularly in the humanities, incorporates and manipulates these records in an increasingly direct manner, existing systems are proving insufficient for providing the underlying addressability and relational expressivity required to construct and interact with complex research collections. In this paper we describe motivations for these "worksets" and the technical requirements they raise. We survey the coverage of existing bibliographic ontologies in the context of meeting these scholarly needs, and finally provide an illustrated discussion of potential extensions that might fully realize a solution.

Building Complex Research Collections in Digital Libraries: A Survey of Ontology Implications

The HathiTrust Digital Library (HTDL) is a digital library containing about 14 million volumes which comprise billions of pages of content. The HathiTrust Research Center (HTRC) is a collaborative research initiative jointly led by Indiana University and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. This paper describes the development of a collections data model by the Workset Creation for Scholarly Analysis project, a HTRC research initiative funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. The resulting HTRC Workset data model is designed to aid humanities scholars by helping them to describe selected portions of the HTDL corpus that serve as the objects of their research. The resulting worksets are persistent, citable, and can be assessed by other scholars for reuse in additional research processes.

The HathiTrust Research Center Workset Ontology: A Descriptive Framework for Non-Consumptive Research Collections

The advent of digital scholarship, together with the increasing momentum of open access for research, have thrown scholarly publishing into flux. In the shifting landscape of scholarly communication, libraries are taking on new roles in order to publish scholarship in innovative forms: by building institutional and data repositories, for example, or collaborating with faculty to develop multimedia monographs or open access journals. The Publishing Without Walls project at the University of Illinois is developing a service model for university libraries to support scholar-driven, openly accessible, scalable, and sustainable publishing practices. To this end, we are conducting a multimodal study of scholars' needs, objectives, and practices in this new age of publishing. This poster presents preliminary results of a large-scale survey of scholars, which aims to shed light on what and how scholars want to publish, when and why they choose to publish digitally, and how they understand the success of their digital publications. This survey, in tandem with the results of a series of interviews and focus groups, is actively informing the development of two digital monograph series at the University of Illinois University Library, along with a model for their development that may be useful to other libraries involved with publishing new modes of scholarship.
