The present invention provides a liquid crystal display device including a liquid crystal layer disposed between a first substrate and a second substrate, a pixel electrode in a reflection region and a transmission region over the first substrate, a film for adjusting a cell gap in the reflection region over the first substrate, and an opposite electrode in the reflection region and the transmission region over the second substrate. The pixel electrode in the reflection region is provided over the film and reflects light. The pixel electrode in the transmission region transmits light. The pixel electrode in the reflection region and the transmission region includes a slit. The slit is overlapped with at least a part of a step portion which is provided by the film between the reflection region and the transmission region.

Liquid crystal display device and electronic apparatus

An advanced MVA technology, AMVA III (AUO or Advanced MVA generation III) which is a protrusion-free technology has been developed. The AMVA III TFT-LCD panel has high optical transmittance (20% higher than conventional MVA), high static contrast ratio (>8000:1), fast response time, low color washout, and substantially free from motion blur. This advanced technology is newly launched for mass-production in LCD-TV.

52.1: Invited Paper: Advanced MVA III Technology for High-Quality LCD TVs

The introduction of flat panel displays that are fabricated with thin-film-transistor liquid-crystal displays (TFT LCDs) has changed human's lifestyle very significantly. Traditionally, the revolution of the TFT LCD technology has been presented by the timeline of product introduction. Namely, it first started with audio/video (AV) and notebook applications in the early 1990s, and then began to replace cathode-ray tubes (CRTs) for monitor and TV applications. Certainly, TFT LCDs will continue to expand in all areas of our daily life in the future. Here a new concept of the revolution of the TFT LCD technology is presented for the major TFT LCD makers. In this new concept, there are four waves of technology revolution with the following themes, respectively: 1) product introduction; 2) performance enrichment; 3) power and material utilization; and 4) functions for human interface. The role of the LCD-TV in the revolution is also discussed.

Revolution of the TFT LCD Technology

We proposed “Additional Refresh Technology(ART)”, which has the features of low color washout and fast response speed by only modifying the pixel layout. Besides, by utilizing ART technology, the image can be real time optimized with simple method. ART have successfully been implemented as the Advanced-MVA(AMVA) mode for AUO's LCD-TV products, that ART has become the promising solution of advanced LCD-TV panels for mass-production.

18.3: Additional Refresh Technology (ART) of Advanced‐MVA(AMVA) Mode for High Quality LCDs

A liquid crystal display (LCD) system comprising: an LCD panel having a plurality of pixels arranged in an array having a plurality of columns and a plurality of rows; a sensor configured to detect a position of an observer in relation to the LCD panel; pixel control circuitry configured supply electrical signals to drive the plurality of pixels; and gamma correction circuitry associated with the pixel control circuitry, the gamma correction circuitry configured to implement gamma correction upon the electrical signals that drive the plurality of pixels that is based on a detected position of the observer with relation to the LCD panel. Associated methods are also described.

Multi-mode multi-domain vertical alignment liquid crystal display and method thereof

We proposed an advanced MVA, AMVA (Advanced MVA or AUO MVA), which has the features required by an advanced LCD-TV. AMVA has the true wide viewing angle, high color saturation and fast response speed for motion picture displaying. Besides, the image processing techniques to enhance the image performance with vivid color and sharpness are also obtained. AMVA has become the promising solution of advanced LCD-TV panels for mass-production.
