An advance notification system (10) notifies users of the impending arrival of a vehicle, for example, an overnight package delivery vehicle, at a particular vehicle stop. The system generally includes an on-board vehicle control unit VCU (12) for each vehicle and a base state control unit BSCU (14) for sending messages to user computers (29) in order to inform the users when the vehicle resides at a certain predefined time period, distance, prior stop, location point from the vehicle stop. Moreover, the BSCU, a computer network, and software located on a user computer may be combined in a plurality of configurations for communicating a message of the impending arrival of a particular vehicle before it arrives. Each vehicle control unit VCU (12) includes a microprocessor controller (16). The VCU sends vehicle location and/or stop information to the BSCU. The BSCU compares the vehicle route stop list with route management software, then determines when to send an impending arrival message by the system operator.

A fast and scalable information prioritization subsystem is also utilized to incorporate intelligent agents coordinator opinion, user preferences, and history of user interactions. In addition, speech recognition and speech synthesis are combined with intelligent agent animated representation and tactile input.

Generally, the present invention monitors and communicates travel data transmitted from vehicles being monitored by the system to users requesting travel information on a particular vehicle. A travel data storage unit receives and stores the travel data. When a user desires to view some or all of this travel data, the user submits a request to a data manager. In response, the data manager retrieves the appropriate information from the travel data stored in the travel data storage unit and transmits this information to the user. The data manager may communicate the information in a variety of mediums and preferably contact information is predefined that enables the data manager to determine which medium is preferable and how to establish communication once the medium is determined.

A Personal Feedback browser and Personal Profile database is provided for obtaining media files from the internet. A Personal Feedback browser selects media files based on user-specified information stored in the Personal Profile database. The Personal Profile database includes Profile Objects which represent the interests, attitude/aptitude, reading comprehension and tastes of a user. Profile Objects are bundles of key words/key phrases having assigned weight values. Profile Objects can be positioned a specified distance from a Self Object. The distance from the Profile Object to the Self Object represents the effect the Profile Object has in filtering and/or selecting media files for that user. The Personal Feedback browser includes a media evaluation software program for evaluating media files based on a personal profile database. The Personal Profile database is also adjusted based upon user selection and absorption of media files. A sound-to-text software program is provided for translating a sound file to a text file.

A high-speed information service system is provided which uses a unique identifier received during call setup to retrieve automatically a personalized profile for an information service subscriber. The identifier uniquely identifies the subscriber, thereby allowing the information retrieval process to begin immediately after the call is setup. The system utilizes Integrated Services Digital Networks (ISDN) signaling and temporary, "out-of-band" signaling to improve information retrieval capability. ISDN signaling permits electronic addressing of information requested by the subscriber, thereby eliminating the delays which accompany DTMF signal processing. Communications between an information service provider and an individual information source are conducted using out-of-band signaling. That is, call setup and information request are processed using a channel other than the channel which carries data between the information service provider, the information source and the subscriber.
