Multivariate methods were successfully employed in a comprehensive scientometric analysis of geostatistics research, and the publications data for this research came from the Science Citation Index and spanned the period from 1967 to 2005. Hierarchical cluster analysis (CA) was used in publication patterns based on different types of variables. A backward discriminant analysis (DA) with appropriate statistical tests was then conducted to confirm CA results and evaluate the variations of various patterns. For authorship pattern, the 50 most productive authors were classified by CA into 4 groups representing different levels, and DA produced 92.0% correct assignment with high reliability. The discriminant parameters were mean impact factor (MIF), annual citations per publication (ACPP), and the number of publications by the first author; for country/region pattern, CA divided the top 50 most productive countries/regions into 4 groups with 95.9% correct assignments, and the discriminant parameters were MIF, ACCP, and independent publication (IP); for institute pattern, 3 groups were identified from the top 50 most productive institutes with nearly 88.0% correct assignment, and the discriminant parameters were MIF, ACCP, IP, and international collaborative publication; last, for journal pattern, the top 50 most productive journals were classified into 3 groups with nearly 98.0% correct assignment, and its discriminant parameters were total citations, impact factor and ACCP. Moreover, we also analyzed general patterns for publication document type, language, subject category, and publication growth.

Scientometric analysis of geostatistics using multivariate methods

A visual display of the most important universities in the world is the aim of this paper. It shows the topological characteristics and describes the web relationships among universities of different countries and continents. The first 1000 higher education institutions from the Ranking Web of World Universities were selected and their link relationships were obtained from Yahoo! Search. Network graphs and geographical maps were built from the search engine data. Social network analysis techniques were used to analyse and describe the structural properties of the whole of the network and its nodes. The results show that the world-class university network is constituted from national sub-networks that merge in a central core where the principal universities of each country pull their networks toward international link relationships. The United States dominates the world network, and within Europe the British and the German sub-networks stand out.

Mapping world-class universities on the web

There have been many attempts to evaluate Web spaces on the basis of the information that they provide, their form or functionality, or even the importance given to each of them by the Web itself. The indicators that have been developed for this purpose fall into two groups: those based on the study of a Web space's formal characteristics, and those related to its link structure. In this study we examine most of the webometric indicators that have been proposed in the literature together with others of our own design by applying them to a set of thematically related Web spaces and analyzing the relationships between the different indicators.

Comparative analysis of webometric measurements in thematic environments

The need to understand the fabric of relationships that are building up on the World Wide Web calls for the application of tools that allow one to extract the underlying knowledge. Some of the most interesting relationships are those that are brought to light by co-linking analysis (the Web analogue of cocitation analysis). We here propose such an analysis based on the co-links that are generated within a closed web environment, using multivariate statistics (Principal Component Analysis, and Multidimensional Scaling) and a connection-based technique (Kohonen's Self-Organizing Maps). An application was made to a generic thematic environment, and the underlying relationships and structures were manifest in the interpretation of the results.

Data mining in a closed Web environment

The study looks at how well the distribution of “sitations” (inlinks received by Web spaces) fits either a power law (of the Lotka type) or a bibliometric distribution for printed publications (of the Bradford type). The experimental sample examines the sitations found in a closed generic environment of thematically‐related Web sites – the case of Extremadura (Spain). Two sets of data, varying several parameters, were used. The sitation distributions found were coherent with those described in previous experiments of this type, including in the exponent. The plots of accumulated clusters of sitations and targets, however, did not fit the typical Bradford distribution.

To reveal the structure of the relationships that establish themselves on the World Wide Web, one needs to apply tools that faithfully represent the virtual environment. Some of the most interesting relationships are those that are brought to light by web-coupling (the Web analogue of bibliographic coupling). We here propose an analysis of this type based on the common links that are generated within a closed web environment, using multivariate statistics (principal component analysis, and multidimensional scaling) and a connection-based technique (Kohonen's self-organizing maps). The results show that it is possible to use the common links of web spaces in order to reveal the structures and the underlying relationships in a thematic closed environment.

Methods for Analysing Web Citations: A Study of Web-Coupling in a Closed Environment

The unceasing growth of electronic information available on the Web has made it indispensable to develop tools to analyse and evaluate its quality. Given the subjectivity underlying most of the qualitative analytical indicators at the present time, we here propose the use of characteristics or indicators of a formal character. We apply Kohonen's neural networks and study their topological organization in order to analyse how Web spaces behave with respect to these networks' formal characteristics. The interpretation of the results brings out the underlying structures and relationships in a closed Web environment.
