Analysis of the impacts of socioeconomic factors on hiring an external labor force in tilapia farming in Southern Togo

Food availability in a region is local food production added imported food and food stock in the warehouse logistics agency. While local food production is supported by featured food production in the region. The objectives of the research: (1) Food availability in Bali Province, (2) the level of regional food security in Bali Province, and (3) featured food commodities in Bali Province. The results of the research showed that (1) Food availability in Bali Province namely the availability of carbohydrate source are 202 kg/cap/yr, protein are 112 kg/cap/yr, vitamins and minerals are 117 kg/cap/yr for 2017, which means it is all beyond the standard FAO food requirements; (2) Bali's regional food security from the perspective of energy availability is guaranteed to be assured, proved by higher energy availability compared to the adequacy for energy; (3) Featured food commodities in Bali Province is rice potential are developed in districts of Jembrana, Tabanan, Badung, Denpasar, Gianyar and Buleleng. Corn, cassava, and peanut potential are developed in districts of Klungkung, Bangli and Karangasem. Soybean in districts of  Jembrana, Tabanan, Badung, Gianyar, Klungkung, Denpasar. Peanuts in districts of Bangli, Karangasem and Buleleng, Green bean in districts of Gianyar, Karangasem and Buleleng. Beef food sources potential are developed in all districts in Bali, a source of protein chicken meat in districts of Bangli, Karangasem and Tabanan. Food sources of fruits in districts of Jembrana, Bangli, Karangasem and Buleleng. Vegetables potential are developed in districts of Tabanan, Klungkung and Denpasar to support Bali's regional food security.

Profitability of Catfish Production in JOS Metropolis of Plateau State, Nigeria: A Profit Function Approach

A study was conducted from March to June 2020 to analyze the determinants of gross income from carp production in the Bara district of Nepal. Altogether, 90 carp producers, 45 each from Simraungadh and Pachrauta municipality in equal basis were sampled by using cluster sampling technique. Primary information was collected through a pre-tested semi-structured interview-based schedule while secondary information was collected reviewing the relevant publications. Data was entered in SPSS 25 and analyzed using STATA 12.1. The results nrevealed that the cost of labor, cost of feed, assistances and services, and training had significant positive effect on gross income from carp prodcuiton. Furthermore, lack of quality inputs was identified as the most severe production problems whereas Dhalta to be given was recognized as the most severe marketing problems. Thus, encouraging the carp producer to manage the cost of labor and cost of feed deliberately, rationally providing the assistance and services and strengthening the skills and knowledge of producer through training could significantly increase gross income from carp production.

Determinants of gross income from carp production in Bara district, Nepal

The fishery sector is one of the main contributors to the economic growth of the region. It plays a significant role in sustainable livelihoods and poverty reduction in several households and communities. The purpose of this study is to investigate the supply chain strategy for developing fishery industry in Aceh province and examine the mediating role of competitive advantage in the relationship between service quality and fishery industry performance, Indonesia. This cross-sectional study through a questionnaire self-administered conducted on three fishery harbours in Aceh. A total of 150 fishermen had participated in this study, the data collected by using purposive sampling. The data analysed by utilizing the Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) via Analysis of Moment Structure (AMOS). The results of this study found that external factor and service quality have direct effect significant on competitive advantage. Further, the external factor, natural resource and energy and internal factor have direct effect significant on fishermen capabilities. In addition, we also found that the competitive Advantage and Internal Factor have a significant direct effect on fishery industry performance. In contrast, this study found that natural resource and energy and service quality do not significant effect directly on fishery industry performance. Also, after conducting the mediating test, we found that competitive advantage has mediated the relationship between service quality and fishery industry performance. Using the Multi-Group Analysis (MGA), this study found that the role of Panglima Laot (as leader of fishery community) does not important for fishery industry performance. Supply Chain Strategy for Developing the Fishery Industry in Aceh Province, Indonesia

Aquaculture remains an important source of food, nutrition, income and livelihoods for millions of people around the world. In Cameroon, like in most Sub-Saharan African countries, natural breeding and traditional fishing occur in virtually every river, lake and pond and the aquaculture sector predominantly comprises of small-scale producers with some larger-scale commercial activities. Although so many Cameroonian natives are involved in aquaculture, little profit is realized from their activities. Barriers to fish production include insufficient quality and quantity of fingerlings, inadequate quality of feed, inadequate financing and weak technical capacities. These problems lead to a core challenge of low supply of fish, coupled with low returns to fish farming and marketing. The study therefore sought to determine the level of profitability of fish farming and assess the main determinants of profitability of fish farming. It used data collected from 60 fish farmers in the Fako Division of Cameroon through personal interviews, using a pre-tested questionnaire. The study adopted net profit analysis to determine profitability and a Cobb-Douglas power function to quantify the effects of various factors on profit. The study found that fish farming is a profitable business with a mean net profit of 1 896 443 FCFA per production cycle of 4 months. Linear regression revealed that profitability of fish farmers was influenced by the price of feed, price of fingerlings and the cost of labor. The implications of the findings are that profitability can be enhanced by building the capacity of fish farmers on how to make fish production and marketing more cost effective. Farmers therefore need to know how to manage both variable and fixed costs in order to maximize profits.

Determinants of Profitability of Fish Farming in Cameroon

We examine the association of oil palm production with income and off-farm employment using a farm household survey of independent oil palm producers in Cameroon. Employing different regression techniques and empirical strategies, we find oil palm production to be associated with household income, a finding which is consistent with per capita income distribution. Exploring heterogeneity in the relationship between oil palm production and income, we show that oil palm production has the potential to benefit non-producers should they produce oil palm. Moving beyond effects at the mean and in the interest of understanding who benefits more from oil palm production, we also show that oil palm production is associated with income gains for all producers. This finding provides suggestive insights that oil palm production is inclusive and could stir development in rural areas. Assessing the implications on off-farm employment, we find empirical evidence that oil palm production reduces the likelihood of participation in off-farm employment. We, therefore, conclude that oil palm production could be a crucial and inclusive profitable venture to increase smallholder incomes and improve livelihoods in rural and forested environments, but significant potentials exist to make the sector more profitable, less labour-intensive and environmentally-friendly in native production zones. 

Oil palm production, income gains, and off-farm employment among independent producers in Cameroon

This study evaluates the determinants and elasticity of the demand for rice in Buea municipality. Cross-sectional data was obtained from sixty rice consuming households in six localities of the Buea municipality. The data obtained was analyzed using multiple regression analysis. Product price, consumers’ income, family size and substitute price were found to significantly influence the demand for rice at 5% level. The demand for rice is price inelastic and as such, consumers are reluctant to forego the consumption of rice due to the prestige attached to its consumption as a “festive food”. The relatively high-income elasticity for rice suggests a potential for the emergence of a large market for rice in the future in Buea. Estimated cross elasticity coefficient between rice and spaghetti shows that consumers in Buea perceive rice to be complementary to spaghetti. Periodic wage reviews in the line of current economic indices will put more income in the hands of consumers coupled with the adoption of modern processing techniques in rice production which will go a long way to generate increased demand for rice in Buea.
