A Cultural Theory of International Relations

Human rights have not played an overwhelmingly prominent role in CSR in the past. Similarly, CSR has had relatively little influence on what is now called the "business and human rights debate." This contribution uncovers some of the reasons for the rather peculiar disconnect between these two debates and, based on it, presents some apparent synergies and complementarities between the two. A closer integration of the two debates, as it argues, would allow for the formulation of an expansive and demanding conception of corporate human rights obligations. Such a conception does not stop with corporate obligations "merely" to respect human rights, but includes an extended focus on proactive company involvement in the protection and realization of human rights. In other words, the integration of the two debates provides the space within which to formulate positive human rights obligations for corporations.

This book provides a new legal-sociological account of contemporary democracy. It is based on a revision of standard positions in democratic theory, reflecting the impact of global legal norms on the institutions of national states. Chris Thornhill argues that the establishment of fully democratic, fully inclusive governance systems in national societies was generally impeded by inner-societal structural factors, and that inclusive patterns of democratic citizenship only evolved on the foundation of global legal norms that were consolidated after 1945. He claims that this process can be best understood through a transposition of key insights of classical legal sociology onto the form of global society. Extensive analysis of select case studies in different regions illustrate these claims. Thornhill offers a sociological theory of global law to explain contemporary processes of democratic integration and institutional formation, and contemporary constructions of citizenship and political rights. Nonsense upon Stilts, or Pandora's Box Opened

for Richmonders in the years following the Civil War. It was that date in 1865 when Southern soldiers fled the Confederate capital as Union troops approached, setting fire to tobacco warehouses and bridges during their retreat. The ensuing conflagration and looting that followed the next morning left smoldering piles of rubble where newspaper offices, banks, and hotels once stood. Almost a half century later, the date would bring a feeling of vindication to a city that spent decades recovering from that devastating fire and the economic upheavals of the Reconstruction era. On April 2, 1914, it was announced that Richmond would become one of 12 cities to serve as a base of operations for the Federal Reserve System. The Fed’s formation culminated years of debate over what kind of central bank the United States needed to avert liquidity problems and bank failures in the future. Should the Fed be governed by the private sector in association with government officials or by political appointees? Should the Reserve banks have a high level of autonomy or be mere branches of a powerful central authority? For various economic and political reasons, Congress decided on a regional approach with the Federal Reserve Act of Dec. 23, 1913. That was only half the battle. For the next three months, the Reserve Bank Organization Committee made some tough choices on the number of Reserve banks, the boundaries of the districts that the banks would serve, and the headquarters city for each district. The latter task attracted formal petitions from 37 cities, including Baltimore; Washington, D.C.; Charlotte; Columbia, S.C.; and Richmond. Every contender had its merits, its fierce supporters, its political levers. While Richmond was smaller in population compared with Baltimore or Washington, the city loomed large in the eyes of Southern businessmen. This was reflected in the flow of capital at the time. Richmond’s national banks loaned $33.5 million to borrowers in 13 Southern states as of January 1914, more than any other community in the country — except New York — and four times greater than Baltimore and Washington combined. This historical connection likely gave the River City an edge in gaining a Reserve bank.
