We present an overview of our research effort on volume holographic digital data storage. Innovations, developments, and new insights gained in the design and operation of working storage platforms, novel optical components and techniques, data coding and signal processing algorithms, systems tradeoffs, materials testing and tradeoffs, and photon-gated storage materials are summarized.

Holographic data storage

Research into and the development of data storage devices is a race to keep up with the continuing demand for more capacity, more density, and faster readout rates. Improvements in conventional memory technologies-magnetic hard disk drives, optical disks, and semiconductor memories-have managed to keep pace with the demand for bigger, faster memories. However, there is strong evidence that these two-dimensional surface storage technologies are approaching fundamental limits. An alternative approach for next-generation memories is to store data in three dimensions. This article describes developments in holographic 3D memories, in which high density is achieved by superimposing many holograms within the same volume of recording material. Holographic storage is a promising candidate for next-generation storage. Research has demonstrated that holographic storage systems with desirable properties can be engineered. The next step is to build these systems at costs competitive with those of existing technologies and to optimize the storage media.

In this paper, we discuss fundamental issues underlying holographic data storage: grating formation, recording and readout of thick and thin holograms, multiplexing techniques, signal-to-noise ratio considerations, and readout techniques suitable for conventional, phase conjugate, and associative search data retrieval. Next, we consider holographic materials characteristics for digital data storage, followed by a discussion on photorefractive media, fixing techniques, and noise in photovoltaic and other media with a local response. Subsequently, we discuss photopolymer materials, followed by a discussion on system tradeoffs and a section on signal processing and en/decoding techniques, succeeded by a discussion on electronic implementations for control, signal encoding, and recovery. We proceed further by presenting significant demonstrations of digital holographic systems. We close by discussing the outlook for future holographic data storage systems and potential applications for which holographic data storage systems would be particularly suited.

Holographic Data Storage Systems

Optical data storage has had a major impact on daily life since its introduction to the market in 1982. Compact discs (CDs), digital versatile discs (DVDs), and Blu-ray discs (BDs) are universal data-storage formats with the advantage that the reading and writing of the digital data does not require contact and is therefore wear-free. These formats allow convenient and fast data access, high transfer rates, and electricity-free data storage with low overall archiving costs. The driving force for development in this area is the constant need for increased data-storage capacity and transfer rate. The use of holographic principles for optical data storage is an elegant way to increase the storage capacity and the transfer rate, because by this technique the data can be stored in the volume of the storage material and, moreover, it can be optically processed in parallel. This Review describes the fundamental requirements for holographic data-storage materials and compares the general concepts for the materials used. An overview of the performance of current read-write devices shows how far holographic data storage has already been developed.

From the surface to volume: concepts for the next generation of optical-holographic data-storage materials.

We describe the design and implementation of a high-data-rate high-capacity digital holographic storage disk system. Various system design trade-offs that affect density and data-rate performance are described and analyzed. In the demonstration system that we describe, high-density holographic recording is achieved by use of high-resolution short-focal-length optics and correlation shift multiplexing in photopolymer disk media. Holographic channel decoding at a 1-Gbit/s data rate is performed by custom-built electronic hardware. A benchmark sustained optical data-transfer rate of 10 Gbits/s has been successfully demonstrated.

High-transfer-rate high-capacity holographic disk data-storage system.

A new photopolymer holographic recording material, ULSH-500, based on cationic ring-opening polymerization, has been further optimized to achieve low transverse shrinkage without sacrificing sensitivity. The extent of transverse (z) and lateral (x) shrinkage was determined explicitly in this study for a range of slant angles in volume holograms recorded to near saturation and in holograms of low diffraction efficiency. The values ΔK x /K x and ΔK z /K z , which represent the physical material shrinkage in the grating vector plane, were ascertained by (1) direct measurement of the differential angle changes in the reference and signal beam angles necessary to achieve Bragg matching and (2) measurement of the average refractive index. The accuracy of this method was primarily limited by the exactness in determining the angle of peak efficiency in the Bragg selectivity curve. It is demonstrated that the peak angle can be established to within a small fraction of a degree. It is shown that the assumption of anchoring and, thus, uniaxial shrinkage as embodied in the conventional fringe rotation model cannot be applied for the photopolymer ULSH-500 under the recording conditions used herein. It is demonstrated that background uplift in angular selectivity profiles can be attributed to nonuniformity in the grating strength throughout the transverse direction of the recording media, and that the uplift can be reduced to negligible levels by using a low fluence pre-imaging exposure. Calorimetric analysis of reaction kinetics was performed using direct laser irradiation delivered by optical fiber.
