Environmental noise is a growing and well recognized health problem. However, in many cases people are exposed not to a single noise source—for example, road, railway, or aircraft noise—but to a combination of noise exposures and there is only limited knowledge of the effects on health of exposure to combined noise sources. A socio-acoustic survey among 1953 persons aged 18–75 years was conducted in residential areas exposed to railway and road traffic noise with sound levels ranging from LAeq,24h 45–72dB in a municipality east of Gothenburg, Sweden. The objectives were to assess various adverse health effects, including annoyance, and to elucidate the impact of exposure to single and combined noise sources. In areas exposed to both railway and road traffic, the proportion annoyed by the total traffic sound environment (total annoyance) was significantly higher than in areas with one dominant noise source (rail or road traffic) with the same total sound exposure (LAeq,24h,tot). This report describes all social surveys of residents' reactions to environmental noise in residential areas that have been located in English language publications from 1943 to December of 2000. A total of 521 surveys are described. The surveys are indexed by country, noise source, and date of survey. The publications and reports from each survey are listed in a bibliography.

The relationship between urban combined traffic noise and annoyance: an investigation in Dalian, north of China.

The development of double infrastructures, a motorway and a high speed railway line for example, leads to an increasing number of residents exposed simultaneously to several noise sources, each one having its own characteristics and effects. However, nowadays, this kind of situation can't be precisely qualified in terms of annoyance. The objective of the present study is on the one hand to determine the effects of combined noise sources on the overall annoyance perceived by residents and on the other hand to study potential particular effects, such as for example synergetic effects from two different noise sources. The results show that a dose response curve, when assessed for one single source (road or railway) should take into account exposure to other sources. For the covering abstract see ITRD E107776.
