Radiometric calorimetry: A review: 1976 supplement

A program to program to develop diagnostics was begun with the first program to extract and control the electron beams for use in simulations and fusion research. Calorimeters to measure beam energy density and deposition profiles and fluxmeters to measure beam currents were developed in the first phase. Resistively read faraday cups to measure anode or intercepted beam currents followed this. Megavolt voltage dividers operating in vacuum and transformer oil followed. A diagnostics laboratory was set up where calibration equipment having a bandwidth of DC to 1 GHZ and about 5% accuracy was maintained. Critical parts common to many diagnostics were designed and stocks maintained so diagnostics for specific accelerators or experiments could be rapidly designed, fabricated and calibrated. Among the units routinely built and calibrated were calorimeters, electron beam and X-ray, multi-megamp faraday cups and search coils (Rowgowski coils), megavolt resistive monitors for oil and vacuu 2 , capacitive voltage sensors for water lines, inductive current monitors for water lines, multi megavolt vacuum load resistor and capacitive cable voltage sensors for trigger timing.

The Diagnostics Development Program for Pulsers at Physics International Co

A calorimeter based on aluminum alloy was developed to measure bremsstrahlung doses. The absorbed dose is determined using a thin-wire resistance thermometer included in an electrical bridge. It is shown that state-of-the-art instrumentation is capable of measuring average doses of 0.1 Gy (corresponding to a change of 10−4 K in the sensor's temperature) and over.

A Calorimeter Based on a Resistance Thermometer

An array of x‐ray calorimeters reading absolute energy fluence and front surface dose in tantalum was developed for measuring the areal distribution of x rays from a pulsed source. The device functions in a high electrical noise environment and in pulsed magnetic fields in excess of 1 T. The fluence detector utilizes a shielded construction to allow accurate measurements to be made in inhomogeneous radiation fields.
