The application of the chirped-pulse amplification technique to solid-state lasers combined with the availability of broad-bandwidth materials has made possible the development of small-scale terawatt and now even petawatt (1000-terawatt) laser systems. The laser technology used to produce these intense pulses and examples of new phenomena resulting from the application of these systems to atomic and plasma physics are described.

Terawatt to Petawatt Subpicosecond Lasers

Accurate x-ray scattering techniques to measure the physical properties of dense plasmas have been developed for applications in high energy density physics. This class of experiments produces short-lived hot dense states of matter with electron densities in the range of solid density and higher where powerful penetrating x-ray sources have become available for probing. Experiments have employed laser-based x-ray sources that provide sufficient photon numbers in narrow bandwidth spectral lines, allowing spectrally resolved x-ray scattering measurements from these plasmas. The backscattering spectrum accesses the noncollective Compton scattering regime which provides accurate diagnostic information on the temperature, density, and ionization state. The forward scattering spectrum has been shown to measure the collective plasmon oscillations. Besides extracting the standard plasma parameters, density and temperature, forward scattering yields new observables such as a direct measure of collisions and quantum effects. Dense matter theory relates scattering spectra with the dielectric function and structure factors that determine the physical properties of matter. Applications to radiation-heated and shock-compressed matter have demonstrated accurate measurements of compression and heating with up to picosecond temporal resolution. The ongoing development of suitable x-ray sources and facilities will enable experiments in a wide range of research areas including inertial confinement fusion,more » radiation hydrodynamics, material science, or laboratory astrophysics.« less

X-ray Thomson scattering in high energy density plasmas

In this article, we review progress in the development of high peak-power ultrafast lasers, and discuss in detail the design issues which determine the performance of these systems. Presently, lasers capable of generating terawatt peak powers with unprecedented short pulse duration can now be built on a single optical table in a small-scale laboratory, while large-scale lasers can generate peak power of over a petawatt. This progress is made possible by the use of the chirped-pulse amplification technique, combined with the use of broad-bandwidth laser materials such as Ti:sapphire, and the development of techniques for generating and propagating very short (10–30 fs) duration light pulses. We also briefly summarize some of the new scientific advances made possible by this technology, such as the generation of coherent femtosecond x-ray pulses, and the generation of MeV-energy electron beams and high-energy ions.

High power ultrafast lasers

The interaction of a 1053 nm picosecond laser pulse with a solid target has been studied for focused intensities of up to 1019 W cm−2. The maximum ion energy cutoff Emax (which is related to the hot electron temperature) is in the range 1.0–12.0 MeV and is shown to scale as Emax≈I1/3. The hot electron temperatures were in the range 70–400 keV for intensities up to 5×1018 W cm−2 with an indication of a high absorption of laser energy. Measurements of x-ray/γ-ray bremsstrahlung emission suggest the existence of at least two electron temperatures. Collimation of the plasma flow has been observed by optical probing techniques.

A study of picosecond laser–solid interactions up to 1019 W cm−2

Absorption mechanisms for ultra-intense (I>10/sup 17/ W/cm/sup 2/) laser pulses incident on solids and overdense plasma slabs are discussed. We focus on the ultrashort pulse regime, i.e., where the laser pulse length is only a few to perhaps thousands of femtoseconds. Starting from well-known results at low intensity and long pulse length, we begin with absorption mechanisms such as inverse Bremstrahlung and classical resonance absorption and survey several additional absorption mechanisms significant for ultrashort, ultra-intense laser light interacting with overdense plasmas. Estimates for the fraction of laser energy absorbed by various mechanisms are given. It is found that the fraction of energy absorbed by the plasma, and the resulting electron temperatures, can depend considerably on the scale length of the plasma at the critical surface. It is also found that two-dimensional (2-D) effects greatly increase the amount of absorption into hot electrons, over the amount predicted using one-dimensional (1-D) theory. The inclusion of kinetic effects, collisionless absorption, and multidimensional effects are crucial to obtaining a complete picture of the interaction. We also review some of the experimental efforts to understand this complex process of absorption.

Absorption of ultrashort, ultra-intense laser light by solids and overdense plasmas

Analysis is presented of K‐shell spectra obtained from solid density plasmas produced by a high contrast (1010:1) subpicosecond laser pulse (0.5 μm) at 1018–1019 W/cm2. Stark broadening measurements of He‐like and Li‐like lines are used to infer the mean electron density at which emission takes place. The measurements indicate that there is an optimum condition to produce x‐ray emission at solid density for a given isoelectronic sequence, and that the window of optimum conditions to obtain simultaneously the shortest and the brightest x‐ray pulse at a given wavelength is relatively narrow. Lower intensity produces a short x‐ray pulse but low brightness. The x‐ray yield (and also the energy fraction in hot electrons) increases with the laser intensity, but above some laser intensity (1018 W/cm2 for Al) the plasma is overdriven: during the expansion, the plasma is still hot enough to emit, so that emission occurs at lower density and lasts much longer. X‐ray spectroscopy of hot solid density plasmas produced by subpicosecond high contrast laser pulses at 1018–1019 W/cm2

We report on the observation of high-electron-density (ne ≈ 15nc where nc is the critical density, 4 × 1021 cm−3 for λ = 0.53 μm) and high-temperature (Te ≈ 400 eV) plasma obtained when an intense high-contrast 400-fs laser pulse interacts with a solid Al target. After the laser intensity is increased from 1016 to 5 × 1017 W/cm2, the kiloelectron-volt x-ray emission is brighter by approximately an order of magnitude and is still produced from very dense plasma (6 × 1022 cm−3).

Production of a high-density and high-temperature plasma with an intense high-contrast subpicosecond laser

We present recent results of our effort to develop an efficient, user-friendly, table-top ultrafast X-ray source. The factors affecting the duration and the intensity of the X-ray emission in the keV range are studied. Ultrafast x-ray emission from ultrashort plasmas

Experimental spectra of hot dense plasmas of aluminium produced by the interaction of a subpicosecond laser with solid targets at 1016 and 5 × 1017 W/cm2 are analyzed and discussed. A detailed analysis of the K-shell spectra is given through time-dependent calculations of atomic physics postprocessed to Fokker-Planck calculations of the laser-matter interaction. The non-Maxwellian character of the electron distribution function is shown. An evaluation of the electronic density and of the ion temperature 7i will be presented through Stark line broadening calculations. An X-ray spectrum from a Tantalum target also will be presented along with a preliminary interpretation.
