A coupled-mode theory is derived from the scalar wave equation for the interaction between forward- and backward-traveling waves in a general slowly varying coupled waveguide array containing an arbitrary number of guides with a grating overlay. The equations include the effects of nonnegligible model overlap terms and changes in modal overlap but still demonstrate power conservation. Numerical results are presented for a contradirectional track-changing filter, which show that the modifications made to the equations are significant for practical devices.

Polarization and Wavelength Multiplexed Bidirectional Single Fiber Subscriber Loop

Path integration is presented as a method of solving 1-D optical coupled wave problems, in which the parameters of the system vary with distance. The method is derived by thin section decomposition and as a perturbation solution to the general matrix problem. Results are obtained as an infinite series solution, which is evaluated for a number of examples; in all cases, the solution is in agreement with that found by more conventional methods.

Path-integral formulation of nonuniform optical coupled wave problems.

The main aim of this digest is to present the problem of TO-OF interfacing and vice-versa, from a few parti-cularly chosen sides. These are: materials and technologies met in both fields, functional components and devices, and full operative systems. We present here a variety of solutions for TO-OF interfaces and draw some gene-ral conclusions connected to their future development. The digest contains also a report on our own contributions in this field.

Optical Fiber Interfaces For Integrated Optics

The Situation of todays optical telecommunications is a curious contrast between the potential bandwidth and the actually utilized bandwidth of optical fibers. It is well known that the bandwidth of the fiber within the 1.3 and 1.55 μm window is in the order of 37 THz, a number which is nearly infinite compared with the bandwidth used in practice. Although it represents a great success that most of the terrestrial communication highways have been occupied by fiber connections, displacing analogue coaxial cable systems with a repeater spacing of 1.5 km and microwave links, the larger amount, consisting of customer access lines, is still monopolized by copper lines. For some time it has been widely agreed that the next big step for optical communications is within the local loop (fiber to the home). It is well known that actual bit rates on customer lines are very low, ranging from 64 kbit/s for plain old telephone services (POTs) to some Mbit/s for cable television (CATV). Therefore cost intensive point-to-point fiber connections have to compete with the very inexpensive copper lines. At several previous conferences 1, the break-even point for fiber and copper has been projected for the next 3 years but break-even has not been attained in any country.

Integrated Optics Applications for Telecommunications

We propose a new multiplexer/demultiplexer structure with tunable center wavelength and a bandwidth between several nm to 100 nm on InP by varying waveguide dimensions.
