Correlation between ionic radii of metals and thermal decomposition of supramolecular structure of azodye complexes.

Some new Cu(II) complexes containing an ON donor Schiff base: Synthesis, characterization and antibacterial activity

We report the synthesis, characterization, crystal structures, nonlinear-optical (NLO) properties, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations of nickel(II) and copper(II) complex based ONO tridentate Schiff base ligands: two mononuclear compounds, [Ni(An-ONO)(NC5H5)] (5) and [Cu(An-ONO)(4-NC5H4C(CH3)3)] (6), and two heterobimetallic species, [M(Fc-ONO)(NC5H5)] (M = Ni, 7; Cu, 8), where An-ONOH2 (3) and Fc-ONOH2 (4) are the 1 : 1 condensation products of 2-aminophenol and p-anisoylacetone and ferrocenoylacetone, respectively. These compounds were characterised by microanalysis, FT-IR and X-ray crystallography in the solid state and in solution by UV-vis and 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy. The crystal structures of 3–5, 7 and 8 have been determined and show for Schiff base complexes 5, 7 and 8 a four-coordinated square-planar environment for nickel and copper ions. The electrochemical behavior of all derivatives 3–8 was investigated by cyclic voltammetry in dichloromethane, and discussed on the basis of DFT-computed electronic structures of the neutral and oxidized forms of the compounds. The second-order NLO responses of 3–8 have been determined by harmonic light scattering measurements using a 10−2 M solution of dichloromethane and working with a 1.91 μm incident wavelength, giving rather high β1.91 values of 350 and 290 × 10−30 esu for the mononuclear species 5 and 6, respectively. The assignment and the nature of the electronic transitions observed in the UV-vis spectra were analyzed using time-dependent (TD) DFT calculations. They are dominated by LMCT, MLCT and π–π* transitions.

Copper(II) complexes as superoxide dismutase mimics: Synthesis, characterization, crystal structure and bioactivity of copper(II) complexes

Hydrazone complexes of Cu(II), Co(II), Zn(II), Ni(II) and Pt(II) with N-isonicotinoyl-N′-(3-metoxy-2 hydroxybenzaldehyde)-hydrazone (HL) were synthesized and characterized by different physico-chemical techniques including elemental and thermal analysis, magnetic susceptibility measurements, molar electric conductivity, as well as IR (infrared), 1H-NMR and 13C-NMR (hydrogen and carbon nuclear magnetic resonance, UV-Vis (ultraviolet-visible), FAB (fast atom bombardment), EPR (electron paramagnetic resonance), and mass spectroscopies. The crystal structure of ligand was determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction studies. Spectral data showed that hydrazone behaves as an ONO tridentate ligand through the azomethine nitrogen, phenolate and keto oxygen atoms. For the copper(II) complexes, metal–ligand bonding parameters were evaluated from the EPR spectra. These parameters indicate the presence of in-plane π bonding. In addition, the f values of complexes 1–4 indicate small distortion from planarity. The effect of these complexes on proliferation of human breast cancer (MCF-7 and SKBR-3), human melanoma (A375), lung adenocarcinoma cells (NCI-H1573) and their antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans strains were studied and compared with those of free ligand. The ligand and complexes 1–3 showed significant antimicrobial activity against the Gram-positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans in comparison to the control drugs. The complexes 2–4 could be potential antitumor agents, leading to a significant improvement of the cytotoxic activity when compared with HL.

Six ternary copper(II) complexes, viz., [Cu(SAT)(H 2 O)] (1), [Cu(SAT)(phen)].0.5 H 2 O (2), [Cu(SAT)(bipy)] (3), [Cu(SAA)(dmp)] (4), [Cu(SAT)(en)] (5) and [Cu(SAT)(temed)] (6), where SAT = Salicylideneaminothiophenol, phen = 1,10-phenanthroline, bipy = 2,2'-bipyridyl, dmp = 2,9-dimethyl 1,10-phenanthroline, en = ethylenediamine, temed = N,N,N',N'-tetramethylethylinediamine have been synthesized and characterized by various physico-chemical techniques. The metal ligand bonding parameters evaluated from the EPR spectra of the complexes indicate strong in-plane σ and in-plane π bonding. The magnetic and spectroscopic data indicate a square planar geometry for complex 1 and a square pyramidal geometry for remaining complexes. The crystal structure of complex 2 has been determined by X-ray diffraction technique. The superoxide dismutase activity of the complexes has also been measured and discussed.

Synthesis, characterization and properties of some ternary copper(II) complexes containing NOS donor Schiff base and NN donor bidentate ligands

Ternary copper(II) complexes containing bi and tridentate polyamine ligands, viz. [Cu (dien)(en)](ClO 4 ) 2 (1). [Cu(dien)(temed)](ClO 4 ) 2 (2) and [Cu(pmdt)(temed)](ClO 4 ) 2 (3) where dien = diethylenetriamine, en = ethylenediamine. temed = N,N,N',N' -tetramethylethylenediamine and pmdt = N,N,N',N'.N"-pentamethyldiethylenetriamine have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, magnetic susceptibility, X-band EPR spectroscopy and electronic spectroscopy. Single crystal X-ray of complex (1) reveals the presence of a distorted square pyramidal geometry in the complex. The complex (1) crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21/n with unit cell parameters a = 8.4014(10) A, b = 14.474(3) A and c = 12.935 (2) A Complex 1 has a five coordinate (4+1) geometry with a CuN 5 core. Magnetic susceptibility and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) behaviour of these complexes show their paramagnetic nature (3d 9 Cu 2+ , S = 1/2) Superoxide dismutase activity of these complexes has also been measured.
