This review discusses the main achievements and future perspectives of the MAGNEX spectrometer at the INFN-LNS laboratory in Catania (Italy). MAGNEX is a large-acceptance magnetic spectrometer for the detection of the ions emitted in nuclear collisions below Fermi energy. In the first part of the paper an overview of the MAGNEX features is presented. The successful application to the precise reconstruction of the momentum vector, to the identification of the ion masses and to the determination of the transport efficiency is demonstrated by in-beam tests. In the second part, an overview of the most relevant scientific achievements is given. Results from nuclear elastic and inelastic scattering as well as from transfer and charge-exchange reactions in a wide range of masses of the colliding systems and incident energies are shown. The role of MAGNEX in solving old and new puzzles in nuclear structure and direct reaction mechanisms is emphasized. One example is the recently observed signature of the long searched Giant Pairing Vibration. Finally, the new challenging opportunities to use MAGNEX for future experiments are briefly reported. In particular, the use of double charge-exchange reactions toward the determination of the nuclear matrix elements entering in the expression of the half-life of neutrinoless double beta decay is discussed. The new NUMEN project of INFN, aiming at these investigations, is introduced. The challenges connected to the major technical upgrade required by the project in order to investigate rare processes under high fluxes of detected heavy ions are outlined.

The MAGNEX spectrometer: results and perspectives

A focal-plane detector for the Enge split-pole spectrograph at the Triangle Universities Nuclear Laboratory has been designed. The detector package consists of two position-sensitive gas avalanche counters: a gas proportionality energy loss section and a residual energy scintillator. This setup allows both particle identification and focal-plane reconstruction. In this paper, we will detail the construction of each section along with their accompanying electronics and data acquisition. Effects of energy loss throughout the detector, ray-tracing procedures, and resolution as a function of fill pressure and bias voltage are also investigated. A measurement of the 27Al $(d,p)$ reaction is used to demonstrate a detector performance and to illustrate a Bayesian method of energy calibration.

The Focal-Plane Detector Package on the TUNL Split-Pole Spectrograph

We present the High-Rigidity Spectrometer (HRS) planned at the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB). The current status of the layout and the ion-optical design of the HRS is discussed.

Ion-optical design of the high-rigidity spectrometer for FRIB

A High Rigidity Spectrometer (HRS) has been designed for experiments at the Facility for Rare-Isotope Beams (FRIB) at Michigan State University (MSU). The HRS will allow experiments to be performed with the most exotic neutron-rich isotopes at high beam energies (≳100 MeV/u). The HRS consists of an analysis beamline called the High-Transmission Beamline (HTBL) and the spectrometer proper called the Spectrometer Section. The maximum magnetic rigidity of the HRS is 8 Tm, which corresponds to the rigidities at which rare-isotope beams are optimally produced at FRIB. The resolving power, angular acceptance, and momentum acceptance are set to match the anticipated scientific program. An ion-optical design developed for the HRS is described in detail, along with the specifications of the associated magnet and detector systems.
