After a brief historical introduction, recent achievements in the theory of plasticity are surveyed with emphasis on applications in mechanical engineering.Kinematic models are presented that indicate the complexities of mechanical behaviour in the plastic range. The fundamental theorems of limit analysis are discussed, and their application to two- and three-dimensional problems is illustrated by examples. Shakedown analysis and limit design are defined. Problems involving large plastic deformations are discussed with special reference to metal forming processes. Applications of the theory of plasticity to impact testing and blast damage are reviewed. Recent changes in the theory of structural stability in the plastic range are mentioned. Throughout the lecture, impending developments of the theory of plasticity are indicated.

Metal forming is not only shaping the form of a product, it is also influencing its mechanical and physical properties over its entire volume. Advanced analysis methods recently enable accurate prediction of these properties and allow for setting these properties deterministically during the forming process. Effective measurement methods ensure the setting of these predicted properties. Several real examples demonstrate the impressive achievements and indicate the necessity of a paradigm change in designing products by including manufacturing-induced effects in the initial dimensioning. This paradigm change will lead to lightweight components and serve environmentally benign designs.

Metal forming beyond shaping: Predicting and setting product properties

From an approximate theory, equations are derived for roll force and torque with and without front and back tensions applied to the strip. Where tensions are applied the calculations for each pass take about an hour; without tensions, and with the use of curves given in this paper, they can be carried out in ten minutes. The accuracy of the calculations without tensions is within about 15 per cent.At the end of the paper there is a discussion of the energy relationships in rolling. At present this should be considered as speculative in character.
