The role and significance of Magnesium in modern day research-A review

This investigation studies the dry sliding wear behavior of magnesium (Mg) matrix composites reinforced with titanium carbide (TiC) and molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) fabricated using a powder metallurgy technique. The effects of both TiC (0–10%) and MoS2 (0–10%) content on the tribological properties are investigated. Wear tests are carried on magnesium reinforced with TiC and MoS2 individually and together in different proportions, using a pin-on-disc apparatus under dry sliding condition. The experiments were made using a Taguchi L27 orthogonal array with five factors at three levels. The wear resistance of the developed composites improved significantly compared to that of the magnesium matrix due to the effect offered by both reinforcements. Analysis of variance was used to verify the significance of factors influencing wear. In addition, the worn surfaces of the wear-tested specimens were examined using a scanning electron microscope coupled with energy-dispersive spectroscopy.

Optimization and Effect of Weight Fraction of MoS2 on the Tribological Behavior of Mg-TiC-MoS2 Hybrid Composites

In the present paper, the statistical investigation on wear behavior of magnesium alloy (AZ91) hybrid metal matrix composites using Taguchi technique has been reported. The composites were reinforced with SiC and graphite particles of average size 37 μm. The specimens were processed by stir casting route. Dry sliding wear of the hybrid composites were tested on a pin-on-disk tribometer under dry conditions at different normal loads (20, 40, and 60 N), sliding speeds (1.047, 1.57, and 2.09 m/s), and composition (1, 2, and 3 wt pct of each of SiC and graphite). The design of experiments approach using Taguchi technique was employed to statistically analyze the wear behavior of hybrid composites. Signal-to-noise ratio and analysis of variance were used to investigate the influence of the parameters on the wear rate.

Optimization of Wear Behavior of Magnesium Alloy AZ91 Hybrid Composites Using Taguchi Experimental Design

This study aims to improve tribological performance of magnesium alloy with the addition of carbonaceous (C-based) reinforcements. Synergetic effects of MWCNT and GNPs on wear performance of AZ91 magnesium alloy was evaluated with this report. AZ91-0.3 wt% MWCNT and AZ91-0.15 wt% MWCNT-0.15 wt% GNPs hybrid composites were synthesized using hot pressing via semi powder metallurgy. Microstructures were examined by scanning electron microscope and x-ray diffraction test devices then hardness and wear tests were performed for all samples. Results clearly show that hardness and wear behaviors of AZ91 magnesium alloy were improved significantly with the addition of reinforcements. Uniform distribution of carbon atoms was achieved for both of two samples. AZ91-0.15 wt% MWCNT-0.15 wt% GNPs composite showed best wear performance among the specimens.

Dry Sliding Wear Behavior of (MWCNT + GNPs) Reinforced AZ91 Magnesium Matrix Hybrid Composites

The influence of hybrid reinforcements including silicon carbide and graphite particles with a size 37–50 μm on the wear characteristics of AZ91 magnesium alloy was studied. The dry sliding wear test was conducted using a pin-on-disc wear testing machine in the load range of 20 to 80 N at different sliding velocities in the range of 1.047 to 2.618 m/s. The results show that the wear resistance of composites was much better than that of the base matrix material under the test conditions. At a speed of 1.047 m/s and load of 40 N, the wear rate (mm3/km) of the unreinforced alloy was 6.3, which reduced to 3.8 in the case of 3% reinforced composite. The antiwear ability of magnesium alloy composite was found to improve substantially with the increase in silicon carbide and graphite content from 1 to 3% by weight and the wear rate was found to decrease considerably. At a speed of 1.047 m/s and load of 80 N, the wear rate (mm3/km) reduced from 11.8 to 9.1 when the reinforcement content increased from 1 to 3%. Ho...
