A system and method for communicating information signals using spread spectrum communication techniques. PN sequences are constructed that provide orthogonality between the users so that mutual interference will be reduced, allowing higher capacity and better link performance. With orthogonal PN codes, the cross-correlation is zero over a predetermined time interval, resulting in no interference between the orthogonal codes, provided only that the code time frames are time aligned with each other. In an exemplary embodiment, signals are communicated between a cell-site and mobile units using direct sequence spread spectrum communication signals. In the cell-to-mobile link, pilot, sync, paging and voice channels are defined. Information communicated on the cell-to-mobile link channels are, in general, encoded, interleaved, bi-phase shift key (BPSK) modulated with orthogonal covering of each BPSK symbol along with quadrature phase shift key (QPSK) spreading of the covered symbols. In the mobile-to-cell link, access and voice channels are defined. Information communicated on the mobile-to-cell link channels are, in general, encoded, interleaved, orthogonal signaling along with QPSK spreading.

System and method for generating signal waveforms in a CDMA cellular telephone system

A multiuser detection strategy for coherent demodulation in an asynchronous code-division multiple-access system is proposed and analyzed. The resulting detectors process the sufficient statistics by means of a multistage algorithm based on a scheme for annihilating successive multiple-access interference. An efficient real-time implementation of the multistage algorithm with a fixed decoding delay is obtained and shown to require a computational complexity per symbol which is linear in the number of users K. Hence, the multistage detector contrasts with the optimum demodulator, which is based on a dynamic programming algorithm, has a variable decoding delay, and has a software complexity per symbol that is exponential in K. An exact expression is obtained and used to compute the probability of error is obtained for the two-stage detector, showing that the two-stage receiver is particularly well suited for near-far situations, approaching performance of single-user communications as the interfering signals become stronger. The near-far problem is therefore alleviated. Significant performance gains over the conventional receiver are obtained even for relatively high-bandwidth-efficiency situations. >

Multistage detection in asynchronous code-division multiple-access communications

Communication networks using code division multiple access (CDMA) include applications where several packets of information are transmitted synchronously and simultaneously over a common channel. Consideration is given to the problem of simultaneously demodulating every packet from such a transmission. A nonlinear detection scheme based on a linear complexity multistage multiple-access interference rejection algorithm is studied. A class of linear detectors is considered as constituting the first stage for the multistage detector. A bit-error probability comparison of the linear and multistage detectors is undertaken. It is shown that the multistage detectors are capable of achieving considerable improvements over the linear detectors, particularly in near-far situations, i.e., in the demodulation of weak signals in the presence of strong interfering signals. This problem has been of primary concern for currently operational CDMA systems. >

Near-optimum detection in synchronous code-division multiple-access systems

A technique is developed to find an accurate approximation to the probability of data bit error and the probability of packet success in a direct-sequence spread-spectrum multiple-access (DS/SSMA) packet radio system with random signature sequences. An improved Gaussian approximation to the probability of data bit error is performed. Packet performance is analyzed by using the theory of moment spaces to gain insight into the effect of bit-to-bit error dependence caused by interfering signal relative delays and phases which are assumed constant over the duration of a desired packet. Numerical results show that if no error control exists in the desired packet or if block error control is used when multiple-access interference is high, the error dependence increases the average probability of packet success beyond that predicted by models which use independent bit errors. However, when block error control is used and the multiple-access interference is low, the bit error dependencies cause a reduction in packet error performance. >

Bit-to-bit error dependence in slotted DS/SSMA packet systems with random signature sequences

An apparatus and method for communicating data between at least two data devices, suitable for use as a wireless local-area network, that provides robust data communication via a radio communications channel corrupted by multipath interference, particularly at high data rates. A preferred embodiment of the invention represents data as a sequence of Walsh-function waveforms encoded by pseudo-noise direct-sequence spread-spectrum modulation. Walsh-function-encoding of the data provides a long symbol duration, thereby allowing the spread-spectrum modulation to provide processing gain sufficient to substantially overcome multipath interference, while providing a high data rate. In another preferred embodiment, Walsh-function modulation is supplemented with various forms of phase modulation, such as coherent PSK for bi-orthogonal signalling, and DPSK between orthogonal symbols for noncoherent bi-orthogonal signalling, thereby further increasing data rate without reducing processing gain. In another preferred embodiment, Walsh-function modulation is supplemented with spectral shaping to allow increased bandwidth occupancy, thereby further increasing the processing gain without sacrificing data rate.

A high-data-rate wireless local-area network

This paper analyzes a direct-sequence, spread-spectrum, multiple-access (SSMA) communication system which assigns a set of M orthogonal sequences to each user. With all direct sequence SSMA systems, K users share a channel by phase modulating their transmissions with signature sequences. However, the users of our system transmit log_{2}M bits of information/sequence. This contrasts classical SSMA schemes which use a pair of antipodal sequences and transmit 1 bit/sequence. In this paper, we assume that the channel noise is a combination of additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) and multiple-access interference. We employ the optimum (single-user) demodulator for orthogonal signals in Gaussian noise. The multiple-user performance of this receiver is analyzed. We obtain approximations for the multiuser probability of error by using a Gaussian approximation for the multiple-access interference. We also obtain an upper bound on the exact probability by using characteristic functions. Our SSMA system is Well suited for application at the lower radio frequencies. Therefore, a companion paper describes a realistic model for low-frequency radio noise, modifies the receiver to include a zero-memory nonlinearity, and studies the performance of the nonlinear receiver.
