The experimental hadronic physics programme at the COoler SYnchrotron of the Forschungszentrum Julich terminated at the end of 2014. After describing the accelerator and the associated facilities, a review is presented of the major achievements in the field realized over the twenty years of intense research activity.

Polarization of a stored beam by spin-filtering

Low energy p¯ p interaction is considered taking into account the polarization of both particles. The corresponding cross sections are calculated using the Paris nucleon-antinucleon optical potential. Then they are applied to the analysis of the polarization buildup which is due to the interaction of stored antiprotons with polarized protons of a hydrogen target. It is shown that, at realistic parameters of a storage ring and a target, the filtering mechanism provides a noticeable polarization in a time comparable with the beam lifetime.

p interaction and their possible use to polarize antiproton beams.

The experimental observables for the elastic reaction induced by protons scattering from electrons are calculated in the Born approximation. The differential cross section and polarization observables have been derived assuming one-photon exchange. Numerical estimates are given for spin correlation coefficients, polarization transfer coefficients, and depolarization coefficients in a wide kinematical range. Specific attention is given to the kinematical conditions; that is, to the specific range of incident energy and transferred momentum.

Polarization effects in elastic proton-electron scattering

I review recent developments in theoretical spin physics. Topics include pion production in nucleon-nucleon collisions, the implications of heavy quark spin symmetry for heavy hadron molecules, the nucleon electric dipole form factors and ab initio calculations of the width of hadron resonances. A few spin physics high-lights from experiments at the COSY accelerator are also discussed.
