N4SID: subspace algorithms for the identification of combined deterministic-stochastic systems

A new method for performing a balanced reduction of a high-order linear system is presented. The technique combines the proper orthogonal decomposition and concepts from balanced realization theory. The method of snapshotsisused to obtainlow-rank,reduced-rangeapproximationsto thesystemcontrollability and observability grammiansineitherthetimeorfrequencydomain.Theapproximationsarethenusedtoobtainabalancedreducedorder model. The method is particularly effective when a small number of outputs is of interest. It is demonstrated for a linearized high-order system that models unsteady motion of a two-dimensional airfoil. Computation of the exact grammians would be impractical for such a large system. For this problem, very accurate reducedorder models are obtained that capture the required dynamics with just three states. The new models exhibit far superiorperformancethanthosederived using a conventionalproperorthogonal decomposition. Although further development is necessary, the concept also extends to nonlinear systems.

Balanced Model Reduction via the Proper Orthogonal Decomposition

This paper provides a tutorial overview of the LQG/LTR design procedure for linear multivariable feedback systems. LQG/LTR is interpreted as the solution of a specific weighted H2-tradeoff between transfer functions in the frequency domain. Properties of this solution are examined for both minimum-phase and nonminimum-phase systems. This leads to a formal weight augmentation procedure for the minimum-phase case which permits essentially arbitrary specification of system sensitivity functions in terms of the weights. While such arbitrary specifications are not possible for nonminimum-phase problems, a direct relationship between weights and sensitivities is developed for nonminimum-phase SISO and certain nonminimum-phase MIMO cases which guides the weight selection process.

The LQG/LTR procedure for multivariable feedback control design

An approach and a technique for effectively obtaining reduced order mathematical models of a given large order model for the purposes of synthesis, analysis and implementation of control systems is developed. This approach involves the use of an error criterion which is the H-infinity norm of a frequency weighted error between the full and reduced order models. The weightings are chosen to take into account the purpose for which the reduced order model is intended. A previously unknown error bound in the H-infinity norm for reduced order models obtained from internally balanced realizations was obtained. This motivated further development of the balancing technique to include the frequency dependent weightings. This resulted in the frequency weighted balanced realization and a new model reduction technique. Two approaches to designing reduced order controllers were developed. The first involves reducing the order of a high order controller with an appropriate weighting. The second involves linear quadratic Gaussian synthesis based on a reduced order model obtained with an appropriate weighting.
