Seventy five years ago, three remarkable papers by Schr¨ odinger, Kennard and Darwin were published. They were devoted to the evolution of Gaussian wave packets for an oscillator, a free particle and a particle moving in uniform constant electric and magnetic fields. From the contemporary point of view, these packets can be considered as prototypes of the coherent and squeezed states, which are, in a sense, the cornerstones of modern quantum optics. Moreover, these states are frequently used in many other areas, from solid state physics to cosmology. This paper gives a review of studies performed in the field of so-called ‘nonclassical states’ (squeezed states are their simplest representatives) over the past seventy five years, both in quantum optics and in other branches of quantum physics. My starting point is to elucidate who introduced different concepts, notions and terms, when, and what were the initial motivations of the authors. Many new references have been found which enlarge the ‘standard citation package’ used by some authors, recovering many undeservedly forgotten (or unnoticed) papers and names. Since it is practically impossible to cite several thousand publications, I have tried to include mainly references to papers introducing new types of quantum states and studying their properties, omitting many publications devoted to applications and to the methods of generation and experimental schemes, which can be found in other well known reviews. I also mainly concentrate on the initial period, which terminated approximately at the border between the end of the 1980s and the beginning of the 1990s, when several fundamental experiments on the generation of squeezed states were performed and the first conferences devoted to squeezed and ‘nonclassical’ states commenced. The 1990s are described in a more ‘squeezed’ manner: I have confined myself to references to papers where some new concepts have been introduced, and to the most recent reviews or papers with extensive bibliographical lists.

'Nonclassical' states in quantum optics: a 'squeezed' review of the first 75 years

Recently, Gottesman et al (2001 Phys. Rev. A 64, 012310) showed how to encode a qubit into a continuous variable quantum system. This encoding was realized by using non-normalizable quantum codewords, which therefore can only be approximated in any real physical set-up. Here we show how a neutral atom, falling through an optical cavity and interacting with a single mode of the intracavity electromagnetic field, can be used to safely encode a qubit into its external degrees of freedom. In fact, the localization induced by a homodyne detection of the cavity field is able to project the near-field atomic motional state into an approximate quantum codeword. The performance of this encoding process is then analysed by evaluating the intrinsic errors induced in the recovery process by the approximated form of the generated codeword.

We study the evolution of the most general initial Gaussian packet with nonzero correlation coefficient between the coordinate and momentum operators in the presence of a repulsive delta-potential barrier, using the known exact propagator of the time-dependent Schrodinger equation. For the initial packet localized far enough from the barrier, we define the transmission coefficient as the probability of discovering the particle in the whole semi-axis on the other side of the barrier. It appears that the asymptotical transmission coefficient (calculated in the large time limit) depends on two dimensionless parameters: the normalized ratio of the potential strength to the initial mean value of momentum and the ratio of the initial momentum dispersion to the initial mean value of momentum. For small values of the second parameter, the result is reduced to the well-known formula for the transparency of the delta barrier, obtained in the plane-wave approximation by solving the stationary Schrodinger equation. For large values of the second parameter, the transmission coefficient can be much larger than that calculated in the plane-wave approximation. For a fixed initial spread of the packet in the coordinate space, the initial correlation coefficient influences the transparency of the barrier only indirectly, through the increase in the initial momentum dispersion.

Transmission of correlated Gaussian packets through a delta-potential

We consider atoms traversing a cavity filled with an optical field. When the atoms are well detuned from the optical resonance the output momentum distribution of the atoms is found to be a sensitive probe of the photon statistics of the light field. Near resonance spontaneous emission smears the diffractive peaks. We obtain a good fit to the experimental data of Gould et at. (1991). As the atoms pass through the optical field they impart a position-dependent phase shift to the field. By making a quadrature phase measurement on the optical field a position measurement of the atom is achieved. We show that it is possible to prepare the atom in a 'contractive state' which beats the standard quantum limit for position measurements.
