Sources for the Study of Catholic-Jewish Relations

This article explores interreligious education from the perspective of John Dewey's educational philosophy. Keenly aware that twentieth-century individuals and societies would have an expanding plurality of experiences, Dewey proposed a democratic educational philosophy able to account for life in a pluralistic world. Three interconnected themes from Dewey's educational philosophy are applied to interreligious education. The themes are the method, subject matter, and participants of interreligious education. Using Dewey's insights calls into question three aspects of the inter-faith movement: dialogue, doctrine, and sacerdotalism.

There is no doubt that the positive relationship that exists today between Catholic and Jewish individuals and communities is due in large part to Nostra Aetate and to the Catholic Church’s commitment to ongoing Catholic-Jewish dialogue1


This research focuses on relevant key issues suggested by the practical, political theology of Johann Baptist Metz and on the significance of his key categories of memory, narrative and solidarity as they relate to both Catholic and Jewish theology


While Receptive Ecumenism is directly concerned with developing more contemporary ways of engaging ecumenically with other Christian groups, the premise of this study is that the transfer of the principles of Receptive Ecumenism to inter-religious dialogue, particularly Catholic-Jewish dialogue, is a possibility2


The thesis argues that the principles of Receptive Ecumenism have the ability to enhance existing Jewish-Catholic relations and to provide systematic and improved dialogue opportunities in the future As a result of reflecting on the past, the present and the possible future of Australian Catholic-Jewish dialogue, this study is better positioned to suggest options for more positive, productive dialogue for the future


The findings of this research have validated the conviction that the security and advancement of the existing Catholic-Jewish inter-religious relationship in Australia is contingent on the development of contemporary, appropriate, effective and vigorous inter-religious education and collaboration

Remembering the Past, Living the Present, Shaping the Future: Catholic-Jewish Dialogue in Australia

Interreligious education has been a concern over the past few decades and continues to be a challenge. This article will review ways in which religious education has attempted to face the issue of education for increasingly multifaith societies. It identifies objectivity in religion as a major concern and will provide a perspective based on the writings of philosopher-theologian Bernard Lonergan.

Lonergan and Interreligious Education.

Voice is critical to youth; yet discerning and claiming a public religious voice is complicated, especially as youth encounter values that include or exclude them based on personality, ethnicity, religion, gender identification, ability, social class, or sexual orientation. Drawing from interviews, we analyze influences on youth to discover and speak their religious voices in public spaces, and to claim religious motivations for their public personas and actions. The study uncovers complex relationships among young people's religious awareness, social contexts, inner dynamics, and public religious expressions. These relationships suggest directions for religious education in faith communities, schools, and other public spaces.
