Tests and exams are more or less unquestioned parts of academic life. In his book on the „ignorant schoolmaster“, the French educator Joseph Jacotot, Jacques Ranciere argues for a radical critique of the disciplinary effects of these instruments of state education and thereby also rejects on anarchist grounds all progressive attempts of educational reform. In this early text, he already fully formulates the principle of „axiomatic equality“, which will play a fundamental role in his later writings. My paper reconstructs Ranciere’s position, partly by tracing it back to its Foucauldian roots, and argues that although it is too spontaneist and thus voluntarist, Ranciere’s intervention poses an important challenge for every reflection on critical educational practice today.

Sie bricht beim Baby shower einer Freundin und im Waschsalon zusammen oder bekommt im Strasenverkehr keine Luft mehr. Ihre immer schlimmer werdenden Attacken bringen sie dazu, dass sie sich bei verschiedenen Stellen Hilfe sucht, wodurch sie erfahrt, dass sie in ihrem Leiden nicht allein ist: „Multiple Chemical Sensitivity“ sei eine „environmental illness“ oder auch „die Krankheit des 20. Doch auch hier horen ihre Anfalle nicht auf, am Ende bewegt sich Carol nur noch mit einer Sauerstoffflasche umher und bewohnt schlieslich ein Porzellan-Iglu, das sie in grostmoglichem Mase vor allen schadlichen Umwelteinflussen schutzen soll. Die letzten Szenen von [SAFE] wirken, als zeigten sie eine surreale Mondlandschaft. Wahrend also der Film die Existenz der Gefahr, der Carol ausgesetzt ist, nicht leugnet, macht er auf eine grundlegende Ironie aufmerksam: Das exzessive Streben nach Sicherheit fur das Leben fuhrt letztlich in eine Isolation, die selbst absolut unlebbar ist.
